How To Build A Nerf Gun Wall {With Easy to Follow Instructions!}

I’ve always wanted to be the “cool mom”.  You know.  The one who has delicious fresh baked cookies waiting.  And the one who has the “fun house” where kids want to be.

So I’m working on some projects to help reach that status!  And today I want to share one with you: how to build a Nerf Gun Wall. Trust me, it’s easier than you’d think and totally worth it!

For the last couple years, our boys have been really big into playing with Nerf Guns.  Every time their friends are over, that’s what they will do.

In the summer, I’ll see them circling the house and running around the farm trying to get each other.  During the winter, they chase through every room indoors.

So with the addition of several new dart weapons for each of our boys this Christmas, it was time to create a place to store and display.

So I went on the hunt for ideas and found some “Nerf Gun Wall Options”.  Based on photos, my husband and I put together this fun Nerf Gun Wall as part of our Boys’ Room Makeover.

Total Nerf Gun Wall Project Cost = Under $50

We came in right at about $45 which included everything we used.  Of course, prices will vary slightly by area (we’re in Minnesota) and quantity/style of hooks chosen too.

Materials Needed For A Nerf Gun Wall:

  • Sheet Of Pegboard (Size Will Vary Based On Your Needs)
  • Spray Paint
  • Mounting Screws
  • Washers
  • 1 1/2″ – 2″ Plastic Spacers  (This is because the pegboard needs to be away from the wall a little to allow for the hooks to insert into the board).
  • Variety Of Hooks And/Or Baskets To Accommodate Your Selection Of Toy Weapons

Step 1:

Spray your pegboard in your choice of paint color.  This takes very little time and we did two coats to get an even cover.

We did spray the night before to ensure it was completely dry for hanging. (This step is optional but really does give a nicer overall finished appearance.)

Step 2:

Measure and mark where you will need to hang your pegboard.   (Try to hit studs or else use drywall anchors to ensure a secure hold in your wall.)

Step 3:

Place the plastic spacer BEHIND the board and run the washer and screw through the front.  Use a drill to tighten.

(Note, we actually used grey plastic spacers but I forgot to take a picture of them before we hung the wall.  So this is the same thing but yellowish in color that my husband had laying around.)

You can see our board is about 1 1/2″ from our wall.  It gives us enough space to slip the hooks into the pegboard but close enough to the wall so it looks nice and doesn’t feel awkward.

Step 4:

Insert a variety of hooks and baskets, based on your needs.  We found over half a dozen hook options at our local hardware store.  Since I didn’t really know what we needed, I just grabbed a variety.

Turns out, we ended up with the perfect amount!   I haven’t picked up any baskets yet but plan to hunt for some to hold spare darts the next time we make it to town.

The Completed Nerf Gun Wall = Organization & Pure Joy {PRICELESS!}

The boys (and ME!) love that we finally have a great way to keep their collection of dart gun options organized. I just love great toy storage solutions like this!

I am no longer tripping over them or seeing stacks in corners (YEAH!).  And it’s so much easier for my boys to play with friends too since all the options are easy to see and easy to grab on the new Nerf Gun Wall.

Now I just need to come up with a neat sign or something for above this “Nerf Gun Wall”.  If you have any ideas, please let me know in the comments!

I was thinking of hitting up my local Hobby Lobby for some inspiration too as I’m stumped.

We made one of these for our garage!! I made it for Nerf gear, but it actually holds our girls' bows and tennis rackets now! I need another one for my son's toys!

My grandkids have their Nerf guns piled into one big box. This would be such a better system for storage.

Hi there. What did you use for spacers and how far apart did they need to be? Where did you buy your hooks. Thanks

Hi Stephanie,

We used short pieces of small PVC pipe about 1" long. We spaced to line them up with studs because the board is too heavy for sheetrock alone. (NOTE: We did use some washers with the screws. And the screws were pretty long...like 3". We chose to use stainless steel screws but you wouldn't have to.) We bought the hooks at Menards but any local hardware store should have something that would work for hooks.

Great job, you gave me the inspiration to build one for the boys and me. We ended up using the peg board from Ikea and the bungee straps.
