What are good baby shower gifts, Mother’s Day gifts, or unique baby shower gifts specifically for the mom to be? This is a question I’ve been asked numerous times over the years.
As a mom of 7, I’m pretty much an expert now on the mom-to-be gifts that expecting moms really want and need.
Whether you’re shopping for family members, first-time moms, a best friend, or an experienced mom like me, I can help you find the perfect gift for the expecting mother.
After you get something for mom, make sure you check out my list of the best baby shower gifts of 2024 to find a gift for the baby too!
I’ve compiled a list of over 50 suggestions for great mom-to-be gifts that any expectant mother would love!
Gift Cards or Gift Certificates
1. Restaurant Gift Card
Trying to get a wholesome meal on the table when you have a newborn can sometimes present a huge challenge! A restaurant gift card can be a huge help! Then moms (and dads) can choose either a to-go service if baby doesn’t like the car seat or take the family out to eat if they feel up to it.
This is a very practical gift that’s also a huge help, whether it’s for a first-time mom or a “mom-pro” like me.
2. Massage Gift Certificate
A new mom is probably not going to be ready to head to the spa a week after her baby is born, however, a massage a few weeks after the baby is born can be such a great way to relieve stress and tension.
3. Hair Stylist Gift Card
Many new mamas realize that the long hair they loved before is just “one more thing to do” when they are rushing to get out of the door with a new baby. A gift card to mom’s favorite hair salon can be used for a new, easier-to-style haircut too!
4. Cleaning Service Gift Card
I think this is pretty self-explanatory – new moms love a clean house but finding the time for it can be challenging. A cleaning service gift card would be a welcome gift for most new moms! Personally, I think this is a perfect baby shower gift for expectant parents!
If she doesn’t have to worry about cleaning her home it gives her a lot more time to cuddle with her new bundle of joy!
5. Car Detailing Gift Card
This is especially nice for a mom who already has 1 or more children. When you have kids, the fact of the matter is that your car gets dirty really fast and sometimes finding the time to clean it can be tough!
Having a nice, freshly-detailed vehicle will certainly help a mom feel ready for her new baby and relieve her of a task that’s also quite difficult to do while in her third trimester!
6. Nail Salon Gift Card
Have you ever tried to paint your toenails at 9 months pregnant?! It is not easy! This is a great way to treat a mom-to-be before the big day!
Breastfeeding Supplies For a New Mom
7. Bravado Nursing Tanks
When my first daughter was born, I spent all of my extra money on items for her, neglecting myself and my needs in the process. That included the things that would have made breastfeeding SO MUCH easier for me.
It’s also been my experience that most people won’t purchase breastfeeding supplies for a new mom. I don’t know if they just find that awkward or because it’s not as “fun” as picking out baby clothes, but breastfeeding supplies are useful and so needed if a mom plans to nurse her baby.
These nursing tanks on Amazon are SO much more supportive and of higher quality than the other nursing bras and tanks I tried.
This is something a new mom might not buy for herself, but she will LOVE you for it if you purchase one for her, trust me!
She will use these so much during the baby’s first year. These nursing tanks provide easy access for breastfeeding while also helping to keep mama warm during the colder months because her stomach is always covered (just one of the reasons I love them).
Of course, you’ll need to know her size, so you’ll either have to ask her or her husband for that info or give her a gift card to the Bravado website so she can purchase the correct size herself. You may also want to check to see if she prefers organic cotton or not (don’t worry, they have some organic cotton options!).
You could also check her baby shower registry to see if she’s added nursing bras/tanks.
8. Lansinoh Hot/Cold Packs
Lansinoh makes these amazing hot/cold packs on Amazon designed for breastfeeding moms called Lansinoh TheraPearl 3-In-1 Breast Therapy. I found these invaluable during the first few days and weeks of breastfeeding! They also work great later on as cold packs for burns, bumps, and bruises.
9. Earth Mama Milkmaid Tea
It’s not uncommon for new moms to have trouble keeping their milk supply up (or increasing it if needed). This tea on Amazon is an easy and delicious way for moms to do just that! I have found everything from Earth Mama to be of great quality!
10. Bamboobies
I’ve used a lot of nursing pads over the years and I have to say that reusable pads are my favorite. They are softer plus you only need to buy them once and then you can keep reusing them over and over and over again. Bamboobies are definitely a favorite brand among nursing moms! You can buy them on Amazon.
11. Earth Mama Organic Nipple Butter
A new mom’s nipples can take a beating (and bitings!). Earth Mama Organic Nipple Butter is my favorite way to soothe them!
12. Portable Tumbler
Breastfeeding moms need to drink more to keep their milk supply up. I find that by filling a tumbler that I can take with me through the house, I’m more apt to drink more each day. Lately, I’ve been loving the silicon tumblers from GoSili.
The straws make them easy to sip while breastfeeding and the lid means there is less mess if my children should accidentally knock it over. Plus, unlike a lot of stainless steel tumblers, this one goes right into my dishwasher!
13. Streaming Service Subscription
When you are breastfeeding, you’ll find yourself sitting down for long periods of time throughout the day feeding your baby.
Even if you aren’t breastfeeding, you might find yourself awake at 2am with an infant who is having one of those sleepless nights or just cuddling with your sleeping baby on the couch in the afternoon. Having a streaming subscription so you can binge-watch a new or favorite show is a great thing for a new mom!
14. Magazine Subscription
Along the same lines as the streaming service, if the mom-to-be doesn’t love to watch TV, she might instead prefer a subscription to a favorite magazine that she can read while she’s breastfeeding. Parents magazine is a great one for a new mom!
15. Nursing Cover
Sometimes I use a cover when I’m out in public and other times the clothes I am wearing make me feel covered enough. All moms are different when it comes to how they feel about nursing in public, but having a nursing cover in my diaper bag always makes me feel at ease that I can nurse no matter where we are.
Another benefit I’ve discovered to nursing covers is that when babies are older and nosier, that helps them to just focus on nursing (and falling asleep if it’s the time!).
You could get all or a few of these items and put them together in a great breastfeeding gift basket for the new mom!
FREE (or almost free) Gifts For New Moms
Sometimes the best gifts are gifts you can give that don’t cost you a thing (except for time). Here are some gift ideas if you are on a tight budget but still want to give Mom something nice.
16. Childcare
Offer to watch the new mom’s child(ren) for her. Even if she is home, this could give her the opportunity to get an uninterrupted shower, fold some laundry, or run to the grocery store without needing to take any children with her.
17. Cleaning
Are you great at cleaning? You could offer to help mom around the house for a few hours, scrubbing floors, catching up on dishes, and cleaning the bathroom. Some moms might feel bad to say yes to great help like this, but if you insist you REALLY want to help, she may just say yes and will love you for it!
This is a great gift both before and after the baby is born.
Offer to help her with toy organization or other organizational projects around the home.
18. Hand-Me-Downs For Mom
Some of my favorite maternity clothes are hand-me-downs from friends.
Maternity clothes are expensive, so if you don’t plan to have any more children yourself, offering your friend/sister your old maternity clothes can save her lots of money and maybe even improve her self-esteem with a great new (to her) outfit or two!
The same works for nursing shirts or dresses you might have that you are no longer using.
19. Lactation Cookies
If the new mom is planning to breastfeed, a great baby shower gift for new moms are lactation cookies. You can fix them now and place them in sets of two in freezer bags. That way, the new mom can take a few out each morning to thaw and enjoy.
I love these chocolate lovers lactation cookies.
20. Friendship
It might sound silly, but many moms are just dying for friendship. There are a lot of lonely moms out there and knowing how to make mom friends can sometimes be a challenge for a new mom.
Try to be intentional about checking in on your friend in those first few weeks and months after having a new baby and make time for her! If you’ve been there before, give her some tips on how to cope with loneliness.
21. Homemade Meal
Include a note on the baby shower card that you plan to bring the mom a new meal (or two!) after her baby arrives. Find out what foods her family enjoys (and if they have any allergies) and then just fix extra when you fix dinner for your own family.
I’ve been the recipient of many homemade meals after having a baby and they are SUCH a huge blessing! I like taking these Applebee’s Chicken Fajita Rollups or this easy Cube Steak recipe to new moms.
Check out my meal train tips for ideas and best practices when doing this.
I polled a bunch of moms and came up with a lot of useful info to help! If she doesn’t already have someone organizing it for her, another thoughtful baby shower gift idea is to offer to coordinate that for her.
Postpartum Supplies
22. Reusable Menstrual Pads
Looking for a gift for a crunchy mom (someone who is into natural/green products)? If so, consider reusable menstrual pads.
I know, I know, if you aren’t familiar with this concept it might sound gross, weird, etc. It did to me at first too. But then after using cloth diapers for my babies, I finally gave in and tried them…and now I will never go back to regular pads!
They are so much more comfortable, especially postpartum when your body is trying to heal.
23. Earth Mama Herbal Sitz Bath
There’s nothing like a good sitz bath when you’re healing from childbirth! There are 6 sitz bath packages in each Earth Mama Herbal Sitz Bath box!
24. Earth Mama Perineal Spray
The perineal area goes through a lot of trauma thanks to pregnancy and birth (hello hemorrhoids!). Earth Mama Perineal Spray is amazing at helping to soothe that sensitive area!
25. Bathrobe
Having a new bathrobe is a great treat for a new mom to have at the hospital. It’s also beneficial for new moms at home.
I like to tell all the new moms I know to keep their bathrobes handy if they have unexpected guests drop by. If she’s not really up for company, throwing on a bathrobe is a surefire way to keep guests from overstaying their welcome! A soft robe is a must-have!
26. Tincture for Afterbirth Cramps
I have experienced afterbirth cramps with every single one of my babies. No one prepared me for it with my first. Ever since then, I’ve made sure I have something on hand to help with the pain of afterbirth contractions.
I love AfterEase and have used it many times!
Other Practical Baby Shower Gifts For an Expecting Mom
27. Body Pillow
Sleeping while pregnant can be less than comfortable! A good body pillow can go a long way toward helping a pregnant mom get a better night’s sleep!
28. Diaper Bag
I am LOVING my new diaper bag from Parker Baby Co! This one is called the Birch Bag and it’s perfect for moms! This bag is functional, stylish, durable, and perfect for both mom or dad to use!
Because my husband is an active, hands-on dad, I like having a diaper bag that’s not too overly feminine since he ends up carrying it a lot. The first thing my husband commented on when he saw this diaper bag was how nice it looked!
This diaper backpack has over 10 pockets and includes:
• Insulated bottle pockets
• Mesh organizer pockets for diapers and wipes
• Mommy pocket with a key ring
• Padded laptop/tablet sleeve
• Changing pad and stroller hooks
There’s room to store all of her baby essentials including a small first aid kit, clothing changes, feeding essentials, and everything you need for diaper changes on the go!
Another great diaper bag is the Metrö – Convertible Diaper Backpack from BBLUV or if you’re a Disney fan, be sure to check out these Disney diaper bags!
29. (Healthier) Indulgences
Many moms enter motherhood with quite a few extra pounds than what they had just 9 months earlier. While we often try to start watching our diet and exercising a few weeks postpartum, everyone likes to indulge in something sweet every now and then!
While Lovely Candy is still candy, I feel better about indulging in that as a treat during my pregnancy and postpartum because their candies are GMO-free, gluten-free, kosher, and have no artificial colors, flavors or trans fats!
They also have a new line of organic candies and I’m loving the Lovely Organic Chewy Candies and the Sea Salt Caramels are to die for!
Everyone likes sweet gifts!
30. Mommy Hook
The Mommy Hook is relatively cheap but comes in SO handy! I have been using mine for years and it comes in great for freeing up cart space at the grocery store and in your stroller!
31. Designer Hospital Gown
Hospital gowns are less than flattering or comfortable! There are a lot of new, beautiful hospital maternity gowns on the market these days for the mom-to-be. Some are even designed in a way to be useful for breastfeeding baby even after a mom goes home!
32. Heating Pad
A heating pad is great for soothing aches and pains, both during pregnancy and after!
33. Dry Shampoo
Sometimes getting a shower after the baby is born can be a little difficult. With a nice supply of dry shampoo, a new mom will feel a little better on those days she doesn’t quite have time for a shower!
34. Essential Oils for Labor
Aromatherapy is becoming more and more popular and a number of essential oils are great for labor. Recommended essential oils for labor include peppermint, clary sage, frankincense, myrrh, and lavender.
I used essential oils during my last labor and they really did seem to make a difference!
35. Cash
While it might not seem as personal, the gift of cash is certainly always welcome and appreciated!
I had quite a few people give cash to me at the baby shower for our 5th baby and it enabled me to save up for the big-ticket item I probably wouldn’t have gotten without it!
36. Phone Holder for Stroller
These days just about everyone has a smartphone. Having a holder that attaches your smartphone to your stroller is a great, useful accessory! It’s been great on my Joovy Qool!
37. Photography Session
A photography session is a great, thoughtful gift! You could gift the new mom with a maternity session, newborn session, or both! You could also add a photo album to this gift so she has a place for all of her new photos!
38. New Mom Coffee Mug
Oftentimes, motherhood means drinking more tea/coffee to help her get through the day! A new mom coffee mug is a great idea and you can pair it with her favorite caffeinated beverage!
39. Pressure Cooker
Having a pressure cooker means that a busy mom can get dinner on the table in a fraction of the time. It’s a great gift idea for a new mom! I love my Instant Pot!
40. Teething Necklace
Just a few months after my daughter was born, I quit wearing jewelry. I was too afraid she’d break it and I didn’t want her putting it in her mouth while she was nursing either.
Apparently, other moms had this same issue and now there are a number of beautiful yet also functional teething and nursing necklaces available.
These necklaces are safe for baby to put into his or her mouth plus give them something to play with besides your hair while they are breastfeeding. I have a Wear Tough teething necklace that I love!
41. Indoor Plant(s)
Lots of moms receive flowers after giving birth, but those quickly die. I prefer to give (and receive) plants that will last. Sometimes having a new baby means you’ll be stuck inside more, so bringing a little bit of the outdoors indoors is great to boost a mom’s mood plus purify the air too!
42. Bath Bomb Set
One of my favorite ways to relax at the end of a long day is in a nice, warm bath. Bath bombs make it just that much better!
43. Devotions For Moms
Sometimes as a busy mom, it can be hard to spend the time with God that I’d like to! Having a devotional book designed for busy moms is a great way to bring moms encouragement every day.
44. Organizer/Planner
Once you become a mom it gets even harder to make sure you don’t forget important dates and events. There are some great planners on the market these days that will help a new mom keep track of everything on her to-do list!
45. Matching or Coordinating Mommy and Me Clothes
Matching or coordinating Mommy and Me clothes are so cute! You can find a lot of cute options on Etsy.
46. Baby Carrier
Almost like giving mom an extra hand, a high-quality carrier is a must-have in my book. For newborns, I especially love WildBird Ring Slings! As my babies have gotten older I have really loved my BABYBJÖRN Baby Carrier ONE.
47. Maternity Coat
If she’ll be pregnant through winter, consider a nice maternity coat, like this gorgeous Rachel – 3 in 1 Maternity Coat from Modern Eternity.
Designed to offer room for her growing belly, this coat is waterproof and keeps mama cozy and warm. Available in six color options, she will LOVE it! The best part is, once baby is here, she can just zip in the extra panel and it becomes a baby-wearing coat!
- Patch pockets with side opening
- Detachable faux fur trim hood
- Machine cold water wash
- Shell: 100% Polyester
- Lining: 100% Polyester
- Filling: 100% Polyester
Splurges For Mom
Do you want to spend a little bit more money and really splurge on the new mom? Here are some great splurge ideas that a new mom will really love!
48. New Camera
New moms are always snapping photos of their babies. A new DSLR camera is a great gift idea so she can capture all of those firsts.
49. Tieks
I got my first pair of Tieks about 4 years ago. I have to admit that had they not been a gift, I probably would have never purchased a pair with such a high price tag. However, now that I’ve tried them, I’m hooked!
I frequently ask my husband for Tieks gift cards for all of the big holidays (Christmas, Valentine’s Day, my birthday, our anniversary) and then put those towards a new pair.
These are the most comfortable pair of shoes I’ve ever worn! They are stylish and comfortable – perfect for a new mom! Rose Gold Glam is one of my favorite colors!
They make a perfect Christmas gift too! They are definitely my top pick when it comes to footwear for new mothers!
50. Custom Jewelry
With so many custom options these days, you could purchase the mom a piece of jewelry to commemorate her new baby. A Mother’s ring or a necklace with her baby’s birthstone are both great ideas!
51. Robotic Vacuum
I got a robotic vacuum a few years ago and LOVE it! It’s so nice to just be able to turn it on and let it do the vacuuming for me. I think every new mom should have one of these! New parents will get a lot of use out of this!
52. Babymoon
Want to go all-out on the mom-to-be? Book a weekend babymoon for her and her husband! If she’ll be in her 3rd trimester, she might not want to fly, but you could book them a weekend room at a local bed and breakfast!
53. Personal Stylist
For many new moms, the time right after having a baby can be really difficult when it comes to a wardrobe that works. Usually, her pre-pregnancy clothes no longer fit, but many of her maternity clothes are loose and unflattering.
Giving the gift of a personal stylist (with some extra added cash to spend on new clothes) is a great way to help a new mom feel better about herself after giving birth.
If there aren’t any personal stylists in her area (or she has a few children and might struggle to find the time to get out) you can gift her a Stitch Fix or Nadine West subscription or gift card instead.
