I partnered with Lorena Canals and received one of their washable kids rugs to bring you our Boys Room Makeover. All opinions are my own.
Our three boys are 10, 7, and 5. They’ve been sharing a room for several years now and things were just a bit too tight in there. So, we finally decided it was time to do something about it. While I would have loved to have freshened up the paint as well, I really dislike painting. So, I skipped that part and spent some time and money on other areas instead (It’s always great when I can save my family money!).
Problem Areas:
- Too Cramped & Crowded
- Toy Organization Was Lacking – Not Adequate Storage For Specific Toys (& Too Many Toys!)
- Need Dedicated Space For Building Legos Or Playing With Small Toys
- Bad Lighting And Fan That Can’t Be Used As It’s Too Close To The Beds
- Stained Carpet That Needs To GO!
- Overall Face Lift Needed To Make A Fun And Welcoming Space For Kids
Boys Room Makeover: Time To Get Busy!
We took care of each of the problem areas listed above. The first thing to go was the carpeting. (One day, our house will be completely free from carpet and I’ll enlist the help of only rugs instead!) The new laminate that resembles real wood made a HUGE difference to the boys space. Yet it’s durable and should hold up to their play.
We removed the two separate bunk beds and brought in a triple bunk instead. This really opened up the floor plan and left room to spare for playing on the floor.
Then, we moved the fan to a different room where it could actually be used. In it’s place, we added a bright LED light and dimmer switch. This allows for a nice light when playing and a “night light” when it’s time to settle down in bed.
My son and husband took an old bookshelf that was falling apart and re-purposed it. They turned it into a small desk that is the perfect place for the boys to build Legos or do puzzles on.
We also added a lamp next to the desk for extra lighting during those building activities.
As for the dedicated storage, we made a DIY Nerf Gun Wall to organize all the kids’ Nerf guns, dart blasters, and bow & arrow sets. It was so simple to create too, make sure you check out my tutorial on building one!
And finally, we added a gorgeous Lorena Canals Washable Kids Rug to give the perfect finishing touch. It allows for a softer space to lay, play, and read on.
Lorena Canals Washable Kids Rug
I’ve been a fan of Lorena Canals’ Rugs ever since I got our first one a couple years ago. The biggest reason? They are WASHABLE! Definitely a must have feature with both pets and kids. Why it took me so long to purchase a washable kids rug still puzzles me. It’s a genius idea! And really helped give the perfect finishing touch to our boys room makeover.
Lorena Canals has been specializing in children’s rugs for over 12 years now. And with their 100% cotton, handmade selection, it’s easy to see why they are so popular! They offer a variety of styles, shapes, and colors so it’s easy to find the perfect fit for any room or decor style.
I had my boys help me scroll through the Lorena Canals rugs in search of the perfect addition for their new room. It took us over an hour to settle on one as everyone liked so many. But in the end, the Light Grey USA Flag Washable Kids Rug won out. We love anything patriotic and it was nice to see Lorena Canals offer four different color options in this style. (The other choices included: Red, Baby Pink, and Baby Blue.)
So now that our boys room makeover is complete, it’s been great to see how much more time the kids spend in their room together. Throughout the day, as it’s too cold to get out in our MN negative temps, I’ll find them building LEGOs, playing tractors, or just sprawled out with a game.
This Boys Room Makeover turned out better than I could have imagined! Everyone is happy with the results and it just feels so welcoming walking in now. No longer is it an overwhelming mess. Now it’s just a fun boys room where the kids and their friends enjoy hanging out and playing!
Lorena Canals also offers a variety of washable cushions, wall decor, baskets, and blankets along with their kids washable rug selection. Click here to view all the beautiful things they offer.

It is beautiful. I love the rugs. How do you keep three boys all different ages from fighting? I shared with two of my sisters for a few years and it was world war three :). My mother finally gave up and put us in our own rooms. I was the middle child.

Hi Darlene,
They definitely have their days! :) But honestly, our kids mostly get along well. Part of why we homeschool is to help foster that bond with each other. So we spend a lot of time learning and playing together. On days where they get on each others' nerves, we either join forces and play a family game, send them to different areas of the house for some peace and alone time, or have them all do something active together like jump on the trampoline.
I grew up not getting along very well with my sister either. So having my kids count on each other and develop working relationships is high on my list of priorities. But I truly credit homeschooling to being the biggest factor. They mainly have each other all day long. So if they want a buddy to do something with, it's going to be a sibling.

The room looks great. Where did you get the triple bunkbeds from?

Hi Danielle,
We purchased from our local Slumberland. However, you can find them online too. Slumberland matched the price for us, though, so we went local.

Hi Jeannie,
I'm sorry. I just realized you were probably asking about the lamp. What I listed above was the new ceiling light we put in. The lamp is: Patriot Lighting Etagere 70" H Matte Black Floor Lamp with Downlight. Also purchased from our local Menards.

Hi Jeannie,
We purchased from our local Menards store. It's the Patriot Lighting Postern Round LED Flush Mount Ceiling Light.
