Decades ago, farm life was something that most people experienced personally. If you didn’t live on a farm yourself, most likely your grandparents did, or at least an aunt or uncle.
Nowadays, small family farms are becoming harder to find but I have previously shared what a winter day on the farm looks like if you want to get a feel for farm life.
So even though family farms are not as plentiful as they used to be, there’s still a lot of folks who live in the country, spend time outdoors, or work outside.
Country Life Means Lots Of Time Outside, So You Need Clothes Designed For Outdoor Use
Before I married my husband, we lived right on the edge of town. As a ‘town kid’, I spent plenty of time outside in the summer but not so much when the seasons changed and the weather was cooler.
This was, in part, due to not having the right clothing and gear. Because living on a dairy farm means being in the elements no matter what the weather, we make sure everyone has what they need to ensure outside time is bearable; no matter what the temperature gauge reads.
That’s why we turn to Carhartt! Founded in 1889, the Carhartt brand has been outworking them all for 130 years with their premium workwear options.
Life On A Dairy Farm
I’m going to be fully honest here, I’m still a town kid at heart — sort of. While I LOVE my life and living where nature abounds, I’m the biggest baby when it comes to cold weather.
That means when the weather is in the negatives and the wind chill is -30, I’d much rather be snuggled on the couch with a warm blanket than outside doing chores. So heading outside when it’s chilly means investing in high-quality clothing that will protect against the elements.
Everyday Jobs That Need To Be Done
When you have animals to care for, chores to do, and a business to run; there are things we just have to do, no matter what.
Farmers don’t get sick days. We don’t get paid vacations. Lining up someone to take our place when we do want to get away is a huge undertaking.
We’re trusting our entire livelihood to whoever fills in. The hours are long and the pay is peanuts, all things considered. However, a true farmer wouldn’t trade their life for anything!
Jobs that my husband and family have to do every day, no matter what the weather include the following (and the day begins at 3am!):
- Check calf barn to make sure all is well
- Mix feed for the milking cows and heifers
- Feed the milking cows and heifers
- Clean free stall barn mats and put down new sawdust
- Milk the cows (5am/morning and 5pm/night)
- Clean the parlor and milkhouse
- Scrape holding pen with the skid loader
- Scrape the free stall barn with the skid loader
- Feed the baby calves that need bottles, clean the automatic feeder, give pellets (7:30am/morning and 4:30pm/night)
- Feed chickens and collect eggs (2x a day)
Of course, there’s also just the typical ‘general’ farm work to do on any given day as well.
Tasks like cleaning pens, hauling manure to the stacking slab, bedding down pens, necessary equipment and machinery repairs, parts run, and more are things that need to get done frequently.
So as you can see, it’s extremely important to be dressed accordingly in the right gear.
Carhartt Must-Haves For Winter
For as long as I’ve know my husband, he’s owned Carhartt. From coats and pants to gloves and more; it’s the brand he has found to stand up best against heavy daily use.
Whether you’re new to trying Carhartt or looking to just make another purchase, here are his favorites.
Men’s Relaxed Fit Washed Duck Sherpa-Lined Jacket – 3 warmest rating
This one is a winner! I don’t think my husband has ever been without his Carhartt coat! Designed with a hood, which is perfect to help shield against cold, wind, and rain; this coat is made of heavyweight cotton duck.
Before I was a farmer, I didn’t realize a coat could be so important, but now I know!
Both my son and husband love this Relaxed Fit Washed Duck Sherpa-Lined Jacket as it’s made for both comfort and performance. The internal rib knit cuffs and warm Sherpa lining truly make it stand out and help to shield against cold.
While both my guys have it in black, it’s available in four color choices: Carhartt brown, dark brown, gravel, and black.
Carhartt Jeans – A Winter Must-Have
Another thing a working man quickly realizes is how important a good pair of jeans is. We’ve tried going with cheapies and always return to the tried and true.
My husband likes the #103342 Rugged Flex Relaxed Fit Canvas Flannel-Lined Utility Pant while my son chooses the #104942 Relaxed Fit Flannel-Lined 5 Pocket Jean. Living in Minnesota, having lined pants during the winter is a must.
Both jeans fit well and feature the relaxed fit that ensures comfort for all-day wear while allowing flexibility for all the bending, moving, and stretching a farmer does.
Each pair features a flannel lining that provides a little extra warmth for those chilly days.
These jeans have large pockets so you can fit your phone easily and the legs are wide enough to easily slip over boots or tuck inside, based on preference.
You’ll notice most farmers wear their pants tucked inside to avoid getting the bottoms full of manure.
Women’s Relaxed Fit Midweight Zip-Up Hoodie
Men aren’t the only ones who love Carhartt. As I mentioned above, I don’t like to be cold. So for me, it’s important to wear layers and this Carhartt hoodie is the perfect layering piece.
I love how it has the soft feel of a favorite sweatshirt with warmth and durability that rivals a jacket. It’s made of heavyweight fleece, with a relaxed fit; making it super comfy. The kangaroo pocket in the front offers the perfect place to warm your hands.
As you can see, our farm family loves Carhartt! If you’ve never given them a try, I highly suggest their clothing and gear as we’ve been extremely impressed with the quality we’ve seen.

God bless you and other farmers. That is too much work for me to think of doing. I like the little blanket on the calf.

We have a good bit of Carhartt gear. When we moved to our new house (on a few acres) with chickens and dogs and started renovations, I realized quickly that my hubby's clothes couldn't hold up with that kind of wear and tear. I invested in some Carhartt jeans and shirts and they have held up well with the use the past few years.
