Our West Virginia vacation was sponsored by VisitWV, Country Road Cabins, and Ace Adventure Resort. All opinions are my own.
“Wild and Wonderful”. “Almost Heaven”. There’s so many things that come to mind when I think of my home state, West Virginia. It’s where I got my sense of adventure, my love of the mountains and the river, and my inspiration for all that southern cooking. Though the rest of the world runs at a break neck pace, time slows down in West Virginia. I’m a wife and a mom now, but I haven’t lost my love for adventure and I give a lot of credit to growing up surrounded by it. There’s so much beauty and fun to be found in West Virginia and because adventure is always better with friends, my husband and I grabbed one of our favorite couples (you might recognize Chris, my Gone Girls counterpart!) and headed to the southern part of the state for a mountain getaway filled with rock climbing, repelling, and ending with a climactic white water rafting trip down the Lower Gauley River! Looking for a memory-making trip this Summer? Grab some friends and find the adventure of a lifetime in West Virginia!
Can I just live here please? Couldn’t you just sit on this front porch with a cup of hot coffee for the rest of your life? I have never stayed in a cabin quite like this before and after getting to enjoy the serenity and warmth of this place, I’m very confident that hotel stays are forever ruined. The folks at Country Road Cabin go above and beyond to ensure all of their guests have an incredible time. From walking in to music playing, to fully stocked amenities, and that down-home cabin feel, there’s truly no better place to stay!
Country Road Cabins has 20 different cabins to choose from, depending on how many people you are bringing along for your trip. We stayed in the “Mountaineer” cabin, a 2 story cabin both cozy and accommodating. This 2 bedroom WV log cabin is spacious at 970 sq. feet and sleeps 6 – 8 in 1 queen bedroom and 1 King bedroom, a queen sleeper sofa and an upstairs full-futon sleeping area. There is 1 bedroom and 1 bath both upstairs and downstairs.
Aside from the beds, the futon upstairs folds out and there’s also a couch in the living room, should someone decide they just wanted to fall asleep by the fire. The bedrooms were very clean and incredibly charming. Of course there’s always the occasional bug that makes its way into the room, but hey, that’s to be expected when you’re staying in the mountains. I’d rather the bugs I can see than the hotel bugs I can’t! Falling asleep was a dream with the sounds of the woods outside our windows and the cool mountain breeze blowing in through the windows.
Country Road Cabins makes being away from home easy! The living room is set for lots of laughter in front of the fire, a good movie after an active day, and plenty of “put your feet up and live in the moment” moments. We found our kitchen to be fully stocked (and by stocked I do mean there was plenty of coffee!). There’s also a charming little dining room table off to the corner which we filled with bacon and pancakes for breakfast. Everything clean, everything working, everything about this cabin was wonderful!
The cabin living room area features a gas fireplace, TV with basic Dish Network package, VCR/DVD, telephone and a spacious covered front porch deck with hot tub and gas grill. The cabin is furnished with central heating and cooling.
The fully equipped kitchen has all major appliances, cookware and utensils you will need.
Nothing beats coming back to a hot tub, in the mountains, on the back deck of a cabin after adventuring all day – and that’s just what you get to return to at Country Roads Cabin. There may have been other cabins close by but we couldn’t see them or hear any neighbors while we were hot tubbin’ it. Country Road Cabins is a very much a family oriented place and we loved the fact that they ask all of their guests to respect quite hours in the late evening and no “house parties” are aloud.
Check out everything you will find at your stay at the Country Roads Cabins “Mountaineer”:
- Secluded with Private Hot Tub
- 1 King and 1 Queen Bedroom
- Two baths
- Covered Porch with Swing and Rockers
- Gas Fireplace
- Satellite TV with DVD player
Country Road Cabins you have a new fan in Our Southern Style & Gone Girls Adventures! We loved every moment of our stay and as much fun as Chris and I would have had adventuring on our own, your cabins are the perfect getaway for couples and friends! We were sad to say goodbye to our little piece of heaven but you’ve left no doubt that we’ll be back!

Ace Adventure Resort – Run Wild. Live Free!
Short of getting married and having my kids, my trip to southern West Virginia and my trip down the Lower Gauley ranks near the very top of one of the greatest moments in my life. The four of us are still talking, still remember, and still missing our white water trip with Ace Adventure Resorts and I beg of you, if you’ve never taken on the adventure of white water, put it at the top of your bucket list! Before we get to the finale, take a look at how much fun it is to climb and repel with Ace!
Of the group, I’m the only one who has ever done any outdoor rock climbing. That being said, it’s been since my college years that I’ve done so. There’s something about pushing yourself and your body further than you thought you could that leaves you feeling energized. Ace set us up with an incredible guide (shout out to you Shane!) who not only made sure we got up the climbs safely, but taught us a little bit about climbing along the way.
From the Ace Adventure Resort base camp, there’s a short bus ride over to the climbing/repelling wall where Ace already has anchors set in place. No need to bring your own gear, Ace already has everything you need! There are several different climbs you can conquer and as much repelling as you can handle! Rock climbing is probably one of my favorite ways to exercise and after 5 hours of climbing, repelling, and cheering each other on, we got some restaurant recommendations from our guide, Shane, and ended up at one of the best burger joints in the state. We all finished our food before our waiter even had time to check on us. Day 1 at Ace Adventure Resorts was an absolute success and we couldn’t wait to see what the river had in store for us!
White Water Rafting – It’s Time To Live – A LOT!
We’ve been running these rivers for years, and trust us, it never gets old. There’s just something about whitewater rafting that gets in your blood. Every paddle stroke is the start of another great adventure, and, we can’t wait to share it with you.
Are you new to paddling? Maybe you’re bringing along some youngsters? No problem! Check out the Upper New.
Want a challenge? We’ve got you covered. The New River Gorge is the reason we are here. It’s a Class V run that is great no matter what time of year, because it always runs, and it’s always different. Or, check out the Summer Gauley for our most challenging and diverse trip on the river.
And then… there’s the Fall Gauley. It’s a dam controlled run that is only guaranteed for 6 weeks in the fall with two runs… The Upper Gauley is steep, fast and intense (Not for beginners) while the Lower Gauley River is scenic, exciting and great for a first time rafter.
Our morning started out with a quick intro where all of the rafters got together to listen to some instruction and sign a few waivers. Afterwards we headed up the hill to get all of our gear: PFD’s (Personal Flotation Device), Paddles, and helmet. The staff was great about making sure all of our equipment fit properly. We loaded a bus with all the other adventure seekers and drove about an hour to our drop off point on the Lower Gauley River. Once to the riverbank we were introduced to everyone in our raft, including our river guide and before long we were on the water.
With everything from Class III rapids to get us warmed up, to some amazing Class IV and even several Class V rapids, we laughed and screamed, and paddled our way to one of the most incredible experiences of our lives. Our guide (D-Rock) kept us safe, entertained, and shared a lot of knowledge about rafting. It’s near impossible to take pictures while flying down the river so we did ya’ll something better by investing in not one, but two GoPro’s, in hopes that you’d be able to not only experience a bit of our white water trip, but that you’d catch a glimpse of all the adventure West Virginia has to offer.
At the end of our incredible trip and after conquering so many wonderful adventures and sharing in so many experiences, we grew closer as friends, and we all grew closer as couples. There’s something about facing your fears, cheering on your spouse, and spending time together in such a timeless place that instantly connects you to each other in new and lasting ways. I didn’t just get to check a few things off my bucket list and experience some of life’s greatest adventures, I got an even greater gift in a deeper appreciation and love for my sweet hubby!
