For years, I didn’t really like my house that much. It needed a lot of work on the inside and the outside had absolutely ZERO curb appeal. (I should also add that it’s an old farmhouse that was built in the 40s.) Over the years, we’ve fixed it up on both the inside and out, added on so we have enough space for our family, and finally added some curb appeal that I so desperately wanted. It’s been a labor of love and required a ton of patience. So if you’re in the same spot we were, check out these top 11 ways to add curb appeal to your home.
Curb appeal helps make a great first impression. While some improvements may take months or even years to accomplish, others can be quick, affordable, and relatively painless. So whether you’re looking to make improvements in an effort to sell your house or just want to make your house a welcoming home, check out these ideas below.
11 Simple Ways To Add Curb Appeal To Your Home
1) Replace Old Worn Out Hardware And Fixtures
If your home is older, or the front is facing the sun most of the day; you’ll notice the hardware and fixtures looking worn, faded, and tired. Update by replacing house numbers, door handle and lock set, and light fixtures. (If it’s in the budget, you may want to consider replacing the entire front door to a classic up to date style too.)
2) Add A Front Porch Or Patio
This is going to be one of the spendier options but it really packs a bang. All my life I’ve wanted to live in a home with a front porch. (Blame it on all the country music I grew up listening to.) That dream finally came true last year and not only did we add on a gorgeous front porch, I finally got some of that curb appeal I’d been searching for so desperately!
3) Dress Up Your Patio Or Porch With Some Seating Options
Comfortable furniture on a porch is an inviting sight for all ages. Some cute seating options, rocking chairs, or a table and chair set is always a good idea. There are many options available these days to fit almost any budget as well. If you’re looking for something more affordable, take a look at the Outsunny 4 Piece Outdoor Patio Set from Aosom.
While assembly is required, once my husband and son had this set put together, it made a wonderful addition to our front porch. The chairs are comfortable and feel solid while still being lightweight enough to move if needed.
This has become a favorite new spot for the family to hang out as we can sit and watch cars drive by, watch the kids play on the playground, enjoy country scenery, or just chat.

8) Add Shutters, Accents, And/Or Trim
Shutters, trim, and accents such as a flower box can add a welcoming layer of beauty and curb appeal to your home’s exterior. There are so many style, color, and material choices for all of these options that you can match any house style you’re going for.
9) Replace Rain Gutters And Down Spouts
These items tend to take a beating over time and replacing them can bring some instant beauty. Many people tend to skip over gutter maintenance so they get banged up and can even start to rust. (GUILTY! Our downspouts have gotten hit by the lawn mower more than once and many were dented and needed replacing when we did our home renovations.) If you’re on a tight budget, vinyl gutter systems tend to be more affordable but investing in copper systems will provide unmistakeable beauty and quality.
10) Add A Front Gate, Arbor, Or Fence Panels
Enhance your curb or garden appeal through the use of a simple gate, arbor, or fence panels. These simple additions can become a backdrop for your space. Choose to purchase a build your own kit for affordability or hire a contractor to build one for you. There are lots of options for materials, colors, and designs which allows you to customize to your personality.
11) Update Siding Or Renew Paint
I know completely replacing the exterior of your home can be costly but did you know a new coat of paint can be an affordable option!? My parents home is about 25 years old and the siding had faded horribly. They looked into updating and found that having it professionally painted was a fraction of what replacement cost would be and will last a long time. So about two years ago, they had it repainted and it looks amazing! Instead of a faded and blotchy blue/grey, it’s now a beautiful solid grey color.
