Today’s post is sponsored by Picture Keeper, but my love for giving back is all my own!
I just love the holiday season, don’t you? People seem to be more friendly and thoughtful during this season. I’ll never forget when, a few years ago, a stranger decided to give to me and my family during the holiday season.
It was Maggie’s second Christmas and I was pregnant with Jacob. And, as a young married couple trying to survive off of one income, my husband and I were pretty poor. It was a few days before Christmas, and Maggie and I had taken my husband’s grandmother out to run some errands. Before heading home, we both needed to get some groceries, so we headed into Walmart. We stopped at a Walmart I seldom go to (in fact, I’ve only been back there once since this occurred, now 6 years ago). It also happened that I hadn’t been grocery shopping in a while. I had a LOT to buy. I loaded my cart with groceries, so much so, that I don’t know if I could have put one more in the cart. I also decided to splurge on the board game Sorry! for my husband and I to play together over the holidays and debated for 10 minutes before putting 3 small Wonder Pets stuffed animals in the cart to finish up Maggie’s Christmas gifts (she was obsessed with that show at that time).
As I pushed my way through the produce section (my last stop) I happen to notice a gentleman glancing at me as I tried to find a spot in my cart that would hold the veggies. I figured he was marveling at my skill for stacking a cart so high with my 21 month old and big pregnant belly. I made my way to the checkout line. Boy did I have a lot in my cart! To this day, it’s still the highest total I’ve ever had at Walmart – $467 and some change. I remember looking at that number thinking, gosh, this is more than Orin makes in a week, but we had to eat and it would probably last us 3 weeks. Just as I pulled out the credit card to pay for our groceries, the man I’d noticed in the produce section came up next to me and said, I’ll be paying for this today, and slide his credit card through the machine before I could react.
Wait, what? I was so confused and shocked. What’s going on? Is this really happening? I turned to him in complete shock and disbelief and remember saying something like, oh no, it’s okay. You don’t have to do that. But I WANT to do this, he said. No really, I said, I’m getting a lot of groceries and this is a LOT of money. I can’t let you buy my groceries. This is way too much. He looked at me and smiled and said calmly, every year I come here before Christmas and buy groceries for someone, and today I’m buying yours.
Well, I was just in shock. I thanked him a number of times and just like that, he walked out the door and was gone. I pushed the cart to my car, tears in my eyes, still in disbelief. I called my husband to tell him – of course it was hard for him to believe it at first too. I told his grandma and then his parents when I took her to their house. Everyone was amazed at this kind stranger’s generosity.
I look back and kick myself for not hugging him, but in my shock and disbelief I just did not know how to act. I hope he knows what a difference he made in our lives that day. To some people, that might not be a lot of money, but to us, at that moment, it was a LOT. It was an entire paycheck! It made a world of a difference to us, and I will never forget that. What a gift!
Now that my husband and I aren’t quite as strapped for cash as we were during the early years of our marriage, we like to pay it forward to and bless others during this season. I love giving gifts, both to people I know and love and those I don’t know.
