This ‘Summer Reading Essentials From Nat Geo Kids Books Giveaway’ post is sponsored by National Geographic Kids. As always, all opinions are my own.
Our three ‘middle’ kids recently spent several days at a cousin’s house. They don’t get to see this particular cousin nearly often enough because they live kind of far away. But when my sister in law dropped the kids back off, she made the comment about how much all three of them love to read. As a homeschooling mom, this warmed my heart as instilling a love of reading in my children was an important goal to me.

Ways To Help Instill A Love For Reading
First, I want to admit that my kids didn’t all automatically love reading. For all five of our older kids (as our sweet little Ruby is too young to read yet), that love didn’t really blossom until about age 8. Here are a few tips that helped our kids.
- Model The Behavior: I have always loved to read. When I was younger, you’d find me with a book in my hands pretty much all the time. As an adult, I still strive to read physical books from time to time so the kids can SEE me reading too. Consider putting down the devices and pick up a copy of a physical book the next time you read so your kids get to observe you reading too.
- Read Together: While summer months are tough to keep this habit up, we strive to do a family Bible time each night. We go around the circle and each take turns reading from a chapter of the Bible. On top of this, throughout the year I will read novels aloud to the kids.
- Visit Your Local Library: Whether you allow your children to get their own library cards or just use yours to check out books, get to the library together. This will open up opportunities for the kids to see a variety of books and do some exploring.
- All Reading Is Good: What I mean by this is that it’s okay to let them choose books that interest them. Our last three readers all began their love of reading journey through graphic novels! While this isn’t your traditional chapter book, it drew the kids’ interest and was the step we needed. (If you’re new to graphic novels, the term graphic novel is often applied broadly, including fiction, non-fiction, and anthologized work. These books are ‘comic book style’ and mix words and pictures.)
