In my last foster care one week post reunification update, I shared that Ruby is struggling hard. This transition, and her feeling like she’s lost two siblings, has been rough. She’s been showing separation anxiety, worry about losing another sibling, and she has been extra clingy while also seeking reassurance through hugs and hand holding. So as we were brainstorming ways we could continue to help her with the loss she’s feeling, we decided to look into enrolling her in the Nature School where her big sister works.

Ruby Started Nature School!

We homeschool and had never really considered sending our kids out of the home for any type of schooling. But given the current circumstances and the fact that our oldest daughter actually works at this local Nature School, we decided we needed to give it a try.

****Slight (non) foster update. It’s been just over two weeks since our two long-term foster kiddos have left. We have heard NOTHING from the county. We have received no reassurance that the kids are doing okay, that they’re safe, or that anyone has even checked up on them. (The social worker is only required to ‘lay eyes’ on the kids once a month.). My guess is that nobody has visited to make sure everything is okay. 😞

So What Is Nature School?

A nature school, which may also be called a ‘forest school’, is an early childhood education model where learning takes place primarily outdoors, in natural settings, regardless of weather conditions. This type of school emphasizes child-led play, exploration, and hands-on learning experiences in nature. These schools foster holistic development, building confidence, resilience, and social-emotional skills while connecting children with the natural world. Our school blend hands-on learning with outdoor exploration for children; fostering curiosity, confidence, and a love for learning in a supportive environment.

How Is Nature School Going?

While Ruby’s Nature School operates four days a week, we choose to enroll her for just one day per week. This offers her time to get away from the house and thinking about her foster siblings while still keeping some normalcy.

Yep. That’s socks with no shoes. LOL. Something I wouldn’t have allowed at home but the kids are given freedom to explore and build skills as their heart’s desire at Nature School. **Yes, we are told to please not send them in ANYTHING we are not okay with them getting dirty or possibly ruined.**

As for how Ruby’s adjusting to Nature School? SHE LOVES IT! She’s gone twice now and I can already very confidently say that this was a good decision. Ruby is super excited about her school (and hanging out with big sis for the day). She looks forward to her school day each week and always comes home with lots to share. And yep, she NEEDS a bath at the end of her nature school days! HA! From a climbing downed tree to mud kitchens to outdoor hammock time; there’s never a shortage of adventure (or dirt!) at school.

As the name suggests, the majority of their days are spent outdoors. All year round! So one of the requirements is adequate gear of course. Being in Minnesota, we will experience all four seasons. Right now, we’ve been seeing quite a bit of rain. So the first thing we got for Ruby was some Stonz Rain Gear.

Stonz Rain Gear Review

One of my favorite, trusted brands when it comes to children’s rain gear is Stonz. They make long-lasting products which extend the life of garments and shoes, keeping them out of landfills. This practice ensure pieces are made well enough to be handed down, used through many children, and not thrown away. We absolutely LOVE how well made every single Stonz item is.

The Stonz rain gear essentials we grabbed for Ruby’s first couple weeks at school included: Waterproof Rain Jacket, Waterproof Rain Pants, and Urban Waterproof Rain Boots. Thankfully, her gear arrived in time for the rainy, muddy weather we had this week! (NOTE: Stonz does also offer a Rain Suit but I thought Ruby would be able to use the bathroom unassisted better with two separate pieces.)

The Stonz Rain Jacket is truly built for adventure. It’s made from premium, fully waterproof 10,000mm-rated ripstop nylon with sealed seams and a waterproof zipper. Top of the line performance, it blocks rain and wind while staying breathable. The relaxed fit and raglan sleeves allow for easy layering and full mobility. This means Ruby is able to run, climb, and play without interference. Plus, the three-piece hood with a soft visor keeps rain off little faces.

Also a must have is Stonz Rain Pants! They are fully waterproof, featuring a 10,000mm-rated ripstop shell, sealed seams, and Taslan reinforced knees and seat for extra durability. The elastic cuffs and adjustable stirrups keep them in place, while the relaxed fit makes layering easy. Again, super comfortable and absolutely built to withstand rugged play.

Finally, once you try Stonz boots, you’ll never want to go back! When it comes to rain and snow, they REALLY get it—and are the perfect choice to help make getting outside easier, no matter the weather. From puddle-proof rain boots, hand-made with high natural rubber content, to ultra-warm, ultra-lightweight Trek boots built for sub-zero temps, their bestselling footwear keeps little feet dry, cozy, and ready to play.

So tell me, have you ever heard of Nature School before?

My grandkids went to Nature School 2 days a week when they were preschoolers. It was a wonderful experience.

I am so sorry that Ruby is feeling that way, but it's totally understandable. I really hope that the kids are doing O.K. I'm glad that she has nature school to distract her and it does look and sound like lots of fun! The Stonz rain gear looks amazing! Very sturdy too!
