This RIVAL 5 Educational Number Strategy Game Review is a sponsored post. All opinions are my own.
Do you like math? Honestly, I wasn’t spectacular with this subject in school but I did love Algebra 1 back in 7th grade. Our oldest daughter is 13 and she detests math. It’s her least favorite subject and the one she struggles the most with. So this Christmas, I decided to do some searching. I wanted to find a gift to help her improve her skills as well as learn to love this subject. And my hunt led me to the RIVAL 5 Educational Number Strategy Game.
Math Lovers & Math Haters Unite
When we sat down to our first game of RIVAL 5, I honestly didn’t know what to expect. Which meant that I also couldn’t really give the kids many answers. As they immediately wanted to what RIVAL 5 was all about. It looked like a great idea online but I needed to see the execution of it.
So we read through the instructions. (Which are printed right on the back of the box! And I LOVE that we don’t have to worry about them being misplaced.) And then got busy playing.
How To Play
The concept behind the RIVAL 5 Educational Number Strategy Game is actually quite simple. Players take turns rolling the three dice. And then they combine each of the three numbers in any way they want or need. And once they settle on their answer. They place their colored token on the board to claim that square.
So for example. If you roll an 8, 3, and 6. You can add, subtract, multiple, or divide those numbers to get a tile space. (Order of operations do not apply for this game.) Just a few options would include:
- 8 + 3 + 6 = 17
- 6 + 3 – 8 = 1
- 6 / 3 + 8 = 10
- 8 x 3 + 6 = 30
- 6 x 3 + 8 = 26
- 8 x 6 / 3 = 16
- 8 + 6 – 3 = 11
- And so on….
Each roll offers a multitude of combination options. You just have to figure them out!
One thing to note! Not all number answers will be found on the RIVAL 5 Educational Number Strategy Game board! So it does get a little tricky at times. Which is all part of the fun of course.
And as players progress in skills, they can choose to utilize different levels of play. There’s: introductory basic (blue), intermediate (green), and advanced (red).
RIVAL 5 Educational Number Strategy Game Review
Because this game is geared for ages 9 and up, younger kids will need some assistance. But I still fully encourage you to include them!
Working with a teammate when playing RIVAL 5 can actually be fun no matter what age you are. But honestly, when our family plays, we all help find combinations for whoever’s turn it is. We find that to be part of the fun. Especially as we work to block someone from completing a 5-in-a-row to win!
Who Won Our First Game?
Are you wondering who won our very first try at RIVAL 5? As a matter of fact. It was our sweet 6 year old son who won! Of course, daddy was his partner so they could guide through the math facts together. But it was a wonderful learning experience and he’s getting more independent each time we play.
To ensure a thorough RIVAL 5 Educational Number Strategy Game review, we’ve been playing several times a day since it arrived. And the great thing is, the kids are enjoying it! While the 6 and 8 year old will sometimes get tired if we play more than two games right in a row. Everyone is geared up and ready for a rematch within a few hours. There’s just something that really appeals to them with RIVAL 5! And I couldn’t be more thrilled as I’m excited to see our kids actually loving math.
And the best part is, the kid who is usually asking for the next match is our 13 year old daughter Hannah!
