When new homeschool moms find out I’ve been homeschooling since our oldest (now graduated and 21) was a preschooler, I usually get lots of questions. And I completely understand why. We were in those same shoes once and I was also full of uncertainty and questions! Back then, homeschooling felt like unfamiliar (and honestly, a little scary!) territory. Our area didn’t have much for a homeschooling community back then and no one in our families had done it before. I felt very much alone. Fast forward to today, and as we prepare to begin our youngest’s journey, I feel so much more relaxed and confident in our approach.
Ruby, our youngest, has recently turned four. At this stage, I focus on introducing learning in a variety of gentle, engaging ways rather than diving into anything too structured. For us, formal academics waits until around age five and a half or six. Right now, it’s all about sparking curiosity through fun, hands-on experiences. We aim for things like: field trips, crafts, manipulatives, and, of course, a few FUN workbooks. I love observing what naturally interests her and building from there instead of pushing a rigid plan.

Following Her Lead
One thing I’ve discovered with Ruby is that she absolutely loves workbooks and interactive learning tools. (This has been a trend with all our girls!) That’s why I’m excited to incorporate resources from Brain Quest into our upcoming homeschool year. They offer such a wide variety of options that make early learning feel more like play than school.

Brain Quest Resources We Plan To Use During The Next School Year
- Brain Quest Phonics Readers: Set 1
- My First Brain Quest Opposites
- Brain Quest Workbook: Pre-K Revised Edition
- Brain Quest Math Workbook: Pre-Kindergarten
- Brain Quest Pre-Kindergarten Smart Cards (Revised 5th Edition)
- Brain Quest Phonics Workbook: Pre-Kindergarten
- Brain Quest Learn to Write: Pen Control, Tracing, Shapes, and More

The Workbooks
These are the updated 5th edition books, which include over 30% new content and cover a wide range of skills. (They do have options for kids from pre-K through grade 6. So check them out for older kids too.) What I love most about these books is how they combine colorful illustrations, engaging exercises, games, and even little challenges that keep kids interested. It doesn’t feel like “work” to Ruby. For her, it just feels like fun when she gets to do her ‘workbook time’.

The Smart Cards
The Smart Cards are already a favorite for on-the-go learning, as Ruby didn’t want to wait till Fall to start using. Each set includes two decks of question-and-answer cards held together with a grommet. This design makes them perfect for tossing in a bag or my purse and using during car rides, waiting rooms, or quick learning moments throughout the day.

Books
I’m also especially looking forward to using the Phonics Readers and Opposites books. Ruby already loves being read to, and I often catch her flipping through books independently throughout the day. So I know these will fit naturally into our daily rhythm and routine.
Final Thoughts About Brain Quest Resources:
We really love the Brain Quest brand and I think they are great additions to at-home learning for all ages! (They have learning resources all the way from beginning to 12th grade!) So if you’re looking for a way to introduce phonics and early learning without pressure, like we are, check them out. Brain Quest is truly a fantastic option. Their products support a relaxed, interest-led approach while still building essential skills. For us, it’s the perfect balance of structure and fun. They’re exactly what I want in these early years.
