Are you embracing the weather change? Here in Minnesota, summer is fading away. The brisk nights are already here. And there’s a chill in the air that wasn’t there before. But with the change in seasons can also come the extra pounds, illness, and overall sluggish feeling. So this year, I have some new healthy habits to try this fall for more seamless transition between seasons. And today, I’m partnering with Kelty to share them with you.
New Healthy Habits To Try This Fall
I tend to shy away from things that are “too healthy”. Example: I could never excel at a diet that was completely sugar free. Instead, I focus on goals that seem more doable. Moderation is key. Almost everything is okay in small quantities… except maybe liver. I can’t stand liver! (I apologize to those who enjoy that food. No amount of ketchup in the world made me enjoy it as a child.)
Eating Fresh Garden Goodies
Fall is the perfect time to grab some new garden veggies that, perhaps, you have never tried before. If you didn’t plant a garden, no worry. Drop by a farmers market. Or put out a Facebook post and I’ll bet others will have bounty they’d love to share. A great way that I’m able to get even our pickiest eater to enjoy some veggies is with my homemade salsa! He has NO idea how healthy it really is! And the kid can eat a whole jar in one sitting if I’d let him.
Get Active And Take Advantage Of A More Comfortable Fall Climate
Now this doesn’t have to mean heading to the gym for a work-out. It definitely can. But gym time is not required. Make being active fun and interesting. Head out for a lunchtime walk. Grab your bike and head to work. Take a day and volunteer at a local charity doing an activity that will keep you moving. And if it’s really too cold to be outdoors, take a buddy to the mall and spent an hour speed-walking the halls.
Exercise Your Brain
That’s right! Think actively too. Part of your overall health and well-being has to do with your brain. Grab a friend and a puzzle. Do some word finds. Play a strategic game. Read a book. Find fun ways to get those juices flowing!
Make A Goal Right Now To Start Getting Adequate Sleep
Ever since I made two (pretty small) changes a couple months ago, I’ve been getting so much better sleep! Number one: Leave your phone in the kitchen! I used to spend hours mindlessly messing around on my phone, Facebook, and games when I should have been sleeping. Without the temptation in the room, I can’t!
Number two: I also now sleep with a weighted eye mask. While I used to be awakened by the bathroom light or my husband’s alarm clock red glowing light. It’s no longer an issue! My weighted eye mask not only offers relaxing comfort, it keeps me in a deep sleep without distractions from lights around me.
Start Taking Vitamin D
As the days become shorter and the weather begins to chill, it’s time to start taking those Vitamin D supplements. And upping the intake of Vitamin D rich foods, such as fish and orange juice, is also a really great thing.
Soak Up The Fresh Air And Sunshine
And finally, a big one. Make sure you STILL get outside! Spending time outdoors is still the best way to grab those sunshine and fresh air benefits. A great way is to get in a few last minute fall camping trips!
