You’ve probably heard me mention dozens of times how we live in a townhouse. That means 2 flights of stairs that I’m constantly using. I walked up and down those steps far too much right after having my second baby, and I knew that this time I wanted things to be different. A body needs time to heal after giving birth and steps are not the thing to help. I decided months ago that I would make a little baby station in our living room before the new baby arrived. After looking around at a number of different playards, I kept coming back to the Joovy Room as the best fit for our family and was delighted when I came home a few weeks ago from the Big City Moms DC Biggest Baby Shower with one!
The Joovy Room is bursting with features, but before I get to those, let me quickly go over the setup. First, the playard itself has a handy, zippered travel bag to make storage and transportation a breeze. It is important to mention that only the playard will fit into this bag, so when you are ready to store the extra pieces (bassinet, changing station, extra storage) you will need to either save the box the playard arrives in, or purchase something else to store those pieces. The instruction manual can be stored in the handy storage pocket on the back of the mattress, so you will never lose it. I love this feature! It took me about 15 minutes (with my big 41 week pregnant belly) to assemble the Room using all available components. Setup is pretty similar to other playards on the market and the directions are easy to follow.
The Joovy Room combines a bassinet, changing station, playard, and storage solution all in one fine piece of baby gear. You can customize this playard to suit your needs by installing all of the extra pieces (changing station, storage, and bassinet) or just the pieces you need. Because I’m using our playard mainly for our newborn right now, I have been using all of the components. The room features 2 legs with hidden wheels, so moving it from room to room in your home is a breeze.
The full-size bassinet on the Room is designed to hold infants up to 15 pounds. Unlike other playards, the Room comes standard with a 100% cotton sheet that works in the bassinet or playard floor (additional sheets are sold separately). Not only is it already included, but this sheet is the softest, thickest playard sheet I’ve ever seen or used. It’s fabulous! When the changing station is in place, it does cover a portion of the bassinet, but my little girl is so tiny that it hasn’t been an issue. Not only do I use the bassinet for Zellene when she is sleeping, I also just place her in there sometimes if I need to step out of the room. My 2 year old son, Jacob, can sometimes be a little bit rougher than he means to be, so this gives me peace of mind, knowing that she is safe when I can’t be with her.
The removable changing table supports a baby up to 25 pounds. The Room’s changing table has a vinyl top (not fabric) so it’s super easy to wipe down. Our little baby Zellene has already peed and pooped on it a number of times and I LOVE how easy it is to wipe clean. It also includes four storage pockets which hang over the side, to hold your essentials. I use our pockets to store diapers (both cloth and disposables) so they are within easy reach.
The parent organizer is the biggest available on a playard. It has 9 storage compartments (including a hard plastic top for wipes) and can hold up to 9 lbs. of nursery items. I use our organizer to hold extra diapers (since we use mainly cloth diapers, they take up more room), extra clothing for Zellene (she ends up needing a wardrobe adjustment at least 2xs a day), blankets, diaper rash cream, and wipes. The parent organizer is one of my favorite features of this playard. It has come in SO handy! I refill the compartments with new diapers and/or clothes once a day and have eliminated at least 10 trips up my stairs each day.
As your child outgrows the bassinet you can remove it to reveal a large playard. The playard is perfect as a safe, comfy place for your child to play or nap. The mattress on this playard seems thicker than others I’ve tried in the past, which makes me feel good about letting my baby and/or toddler nap on it.
The Room also comes equipped with a built-in MP3 (iPod) jack with speaker. You have the option to play your personal playlist or the integrated music with sleep mode. Looking for a good CD that is calming, yet easy on a parent’s ear? I love to put on Michael Bolton’s album Vintage (it’s free right now for Amazon Prime members) for Zellene. We both find it soothing! If you’ll be using this playard at night you and your child will also love the built-in nightlight.
The Joovy Room playard has not disappointed me! As visitors have come by to see Zellene, we have gotten many comments about how nice it is and “I wish they had that when I had my baby!” It makes my life so much easier every day and I highly recommend it!
