Joovy Boob Bottles

Joovy Boob Bottles

I’m so excited today to talk to you all about Joovy bottles, specifically the Joovy Boob Bottles. They make both glass baby bottles and also PPSU baby bottles.

Bottle or Breast? It’s the huge debate that I personally HATE to see mothers get into. We are all mothers who love our children dearly and the milk you decide to feed your child and the way you choose to feed them that milk should never be attacked. FED IS BEST! Whether you give your child formula, breast milk, or a combination of both of those, there is a really good chance that sometime during their first 24 months they will use a bottle.

I have chosen to breastfeed both of my children exclusively (and plan to do so again with our 3rd addition this June), however having a supply of bottles on hand has always been important to me. With my other 2 children, I have introduced a bottle between 3-6 weeks and I plan to do so again with our 3rd baby this summer. I use bottles to give my babies expressed milk when my husband and I go out for a date, or other times when I’m unable to be with them.

The awesome people at Joovy found out I was expecting a new little one in June and were kind enough to send me Boob bottles to try out for the new little squish. I still have the bottles I used for Maggie and Jacob, but they are starting to show their age, so I was delighted to have the opportunity to review these bottles, especially since Joovy is one of my favorite baby brands. I was sent their Boob Glass Bottles with Sleeves (1 in each color) and a Joovy Boob PPSU 23-Piece Gift Set (at no cost, to facilitate this review).

Joovy Boob Bottles

Glass Boob Bottles

Let’s start by talking about the individual Boob Glass Bottle with Sleeve. It’s been called the most innovative baby bottle on the market today. This bottle is comprised of Joovy’s newly designed nipple, CleanFlow Vent Ring, glass bottle, nipple cover, and a silicone sleeve to reduce slips and provide an excellent cushion against bumps and drops. As I mentioned above, this bottle is available with 4 different silicone sleeve colors: green, yellow, blue, and pink. It is also available in 2 sizes: 5 ounces and 8 ounces.  The 5oz bottle comes with a Stage 1 nipple (0+ months) while the 8oz bottle comes with a Stage 2 nipple (3+months).

The Joovy Boob Glass Bottle can withstand a sudden temperature change of 176 degrees Fahrenheit, or 80 degrees Celsius. It is also top rack dishwasher safe, or you can wash by hand with mild soap and hot water.

As a breastfeeding mom, I really appreciate that Joovy took the time to develop a nipple that is wide in diameter at the nipple base, with a nipple length designed to assist your baby in achieving a proper “latch.”  This helps to make transitioning from breast to bottle and back to breast again quick and easy. I love the look and feel of this bottle. Sure, it is certainly going to be heavier than a plastic bottle that you might be accustomed to, but I don’t mind the weight.

PPSU Bottles

Joovy bottles

The Joovy Boob PPSU 23-Piece Gift Set contains:

  • (3) 9 oz./260  ml PPSU Bottles with stage 2 nipples
  • (1) 9 oz./260 ml Insulator
  • (3) 5 oz./160 ml PPSU Bottles with stage 1 nipples
  • (1) 5 oz./160 ml Insulator
  • (2) Breast Pump Adapters
  • (3) Sealing Caps
  • (2) Stage 0 Nipples, (1) Stage 1 Nipple, (1) Stage 2 Nipple, (2) Stage 3 Nipples, (2) Stage X nipples
  • (1) Nipple Brush,
  • (1) Bottle Brush

The first thing I want to touch on with this set is the “PPSU” label. Along with the glass Boob Bottles, Joovy also offers 2 types of plastic bottles: the PPSU and the PP bottles.  I had no idea what this meant, and I’m guessing you probably don’t either. So let me quickly explain the difference. PPSU stands for Polyphenylsulfone; the simple explanation for why Joovy uses this in their top-of-the-line plastic bottles is because PPSU can stand up to repeated sterilizations, it won’t absorb odor or color, and it is also free of BPA, phthalate, and lead.

Basically, if you are prone to dropping and breaking things, it’s a great alternative to their glass bottles.  The Joovy Boob PP bottles are manufactured using a more cost-effective form of plastic, polypropylene. You still get the innovative design , features, and awesome look of the Joovy Boob, with a plastic that is durable and free of BPA, phthalate, and lead, but at a lower price point.

Joovy Bottles

These bottles/nipples have the same design as the Joovy Boob Glass Bottles. When deciding between the glass bottles and the PPSU bottles, your main differences are going to be breakability, weight of the bottles, and cost of the bottles. Each family is going to be different as to what works best for them and personal preference. If you decide to go the plastic route, then the main difference between the PPSU and the PP models is that with the PP bottle, you run the risk of it absorbing odors and colors, and generally wearing out quicker than the PPSU model, however the PP model comes with the smallest price tag.

Now that I’ve explained the difference, let me talk about this PPSU gift set I was sent. There are a total of 6 bottles in this set. For a breastfeeding mom (like me) who only uses bottles on occasion, this is all you would need.  This set also allows you to try out each nipple flow rate. Again, I can’t see the need for our family to purchase any additional nipples due to the limited amount of bottle feeding my babies have. If you plan to use bottles exclusively, there’s a good chance you will need to buy a few extra 9 oz size bottles and nipples once your little one increases their feeding amount OR you will just need to be good about washing bottles frequently.

PPSU

This gift set comes with a few extra items, besides your the basic bottles, that I’d like to briefly touch on.  First, you’ve got your bottle and nipple brushes. That’s pretty self explanatory. Those are a must-have for cleaning bottles, and these look great! Next this set includes 2 breast pump adapters and 3 sealing caps. The breast pump adapters allow you to pump directly into your Boob Bottles, then seal the bottle with the included caps until you are ready to use.  The adapters are compatible with most major breast pumps, the exclusion being Avent. It’s also important to note that the adapters will work with both plastic versions of the Boob (PP & PPSU) but not the Glass version.

Joovy Extras

Lastly, there is 1 insulator included for each bottle size. The insulators are designed to keep bottles at their desired feeding temperature for longer. They are see-through so you can still see how much milk your child is drinking, and they are also easy to remove/attach.

Joovy With Insulator
Overall, I’m extremely pleased with the Joovy Boob bottles.  They are clearly well-made, designed for functionality, and will last for years. I was originally most excited to see the glass bottles in person, because I really wanted to make the switch from plastic to glass. However, after seeing the benefits to the PPSU bottles, I’m intrigued and looking forward to using those as well. After our new baby has arrived and I’ve had a chance to try out both glass and PPSU, I will let you know my preference. I’m leaning towards the glass bottle right now, but honestly love them both! Thanks Joovy!

Does the silicone sleeve have to be removed from the glass bottle when you wash it? I'm not seeing any washing info...

No, they can stay on (although you can remove them if you'd like). I never remove mine.

I have the glass bottles, and we love them for the most part. I've dropped them several times on hardwood floors and they don't break. I've dropped them with and without the silicone sleeves on them too. My only complaint is that the bottle lid/caps don't for the glass bottles. Such a bummer.

Hi! Will the Joovy Boob 9oz bottles fit the Tommee Tippee electric sterilizer? I just wanted to make sure since electric sterilizers are not cheap and I'm afraid to buy one that won't fit my preferred bottle brand.. Thanks so much for your help! :)

Hi Erika,

I'm honestly not sure about the sterilizer. I don't have one of those. Sorry!

FTM due in September looking for help on purchasing joovy boob bottles! I am looking to purchase the starter PPSU set as well as glass bottles, but I don't know which glass bottles to purchase. Do I need the 5 oz size or 8 oz size? Can I put a stage 1 nipple on an 8 oz glass bottle? How many bottles/nipples does a working, breastfeeding mom need? Do I need to purchase extra accessories like more breast pump adapters or insulators? Thank you for your help!

Congratulations! I think you'll love the Joovy Boob bottles! If you are trying to save on cost, I would recommend just purchasing the 8oz size glass bottles. You do not need the 5oz size, unless you are just wanting a smaller bottle to hold or take up less space. You can indeed put a stage 1 nipple on an 8 oz bottle. I myself have never worked out of the home full time while breastfeeding, but the number of bottles you will need depends on your childcare arrangements. If they will allow you to bring your expressed milk in storage bags, I would suggest doing that and then just leaving 2 bottles at daycare all the time. They can wash and reuse. (I worked in daycare and we were willing to do this, however it might depend on your daycare.) If you will be breastfeeding at home usually, I would recommend another 2 bottles to keep on hand for when you hire a babysitter and go out for the evening.

If you purchase the gift set I mentioned above in the PPSU, you'll get breast pump adapters, a cleaning brush, and sealing caps for the bottles.

As far as bottle feeding in general, I'd recommend waiting until your baby is 3 weeks of age before introducing the bottle. I have always done that and never had an issue switching back and forth between bottle and breast for my babies. Also, I would hold off on purchasing additional nipples until you are ready to go back to work. Depending on when that is, you may already be past the 1st and maybe 2nd nipple stages.

Good luck! Let me know if you have any other questions I can answer.

Thanks for the review. I have definitely considered glass. I have to get new ones when/if we are blessed with another so these will be at the top of our registry.
