My little girl Maggie will be 4 in March. She’s such a “big girl” and yet, still such a little girl. She is tiny and petite for her age, which sometimes holds her back from doing the things she wants to do. One of those things is riding a bike. Maggie has a tricycle, but her feet just can not reach the pedals. She’s been trying for over a year to ride that tricycle, and she just can’t, much to her disappointment. After her last attempt at riding it, (and still unable to reach the pedals) I told my husband that we needed to get her a balance bike. As a Joovy Mom, they agreed to send me one of their Bicycoo Balance Bikes for review. I couldn’t wait to give it to Maggie and see what she thought!
Now, you might be wondering, why purchase a bicycle with no pedals?! I admit, I thought the same thing when I first heard of balance bikes, and my husband was especially hard to convince. As the name suggests, a balance bike is designed to teach your child how to balance, rather than learn to pedal. Many people believe that learning balance first, and then pedaling later, is much easier on a young child. With a balance bike, your child will use his or her feet to gain their speed, and then pull their feet off the ground to glide. No longer does a young child have to watch the bigger kids flying by on their bikes and feel left out. This enables them to join with the other children much earlier. Not only will your child be getting exercise, they will also be gaining confidence!
When the Bicycoo arrived, I was amazed and excited at the EASY assembly of this bike. Here it is just out of the box:
I had to insert the front wheel and then the handlebar–that’s it! All the tools needed for assembly are included, and it shouldn’t take you longer than 5 minutes.
The Joovy Bicycoo has won design awards at Europe’s largest trade show, and I can see why! The Bicycoo is made with an aluminum frame to keep it light: the assembled bike weighs just 8.75 pounds. It has pneumatic (air) tires which are refillable. It also has a height adjustable seat and a hand-brake for the rear tire. My husband could not stop talking about how great the Bicycoo looks. He loves that it looks and feels just like a regular bicycle, just without the pedals. He says it is built to last, and that’s important to both of us!
Once our Bicycoo was set up and ready to go, not only was my daughter thrilled to try out her new bike, my son was pretty excited as well. Jacob unfortunately needs to grow just a little bit taller before he can ride it unassisted (although he has a lot of fun when we push him through the house on it). He is currently 17 months old, so I expect he’ll be tall enough by the time he turns 2 years old. Maggie, on the other hand, is the perfect size for this bike, and she is just loving it! The weather has already turned colder in our neck of the woods, so I’ve been letting her ride it in the house. She’s getting so good at riding her Bicycoo already, and I know by the time spring rolls back around, she will be a pro! She is so excited to be able to ride bikes alongside of us on our favorite trails when the weather is nice.
The Joovy Bicycoo Balance Bike is a great little balance bike! I highly recommend it and would encourage you to check it out for Christmas! It would make a great gift for a little boy or girl.
