I’m proud to be working with CVS Pharmacy to promote the CVS ExtraCare Rewards program and share these tips about how to save money on your summer road trip. All opinions expressed are my own, and all product claims or program details shared should be verified at CVS.com or with the appropriate manufacturers.
We have four young children, but that doesn’t stop us from loading up our minivan and heading out on road trips all up and down the East coast! Our last big road trip was a 14 hour drive from West Virginia to Florida last June. At that time, our youngest was just 4.5 months old. A lot of people say we’re brave, I think we’re just prepared AND love a good family travel adventure!
It’s so important to me to save money, really it’s the only thing that makes vacations possible with our big family. Over the years I’ve found a few tips and tricks to keep costs down on a road trip.
So the thing is, a lot of hotels only offer you 2 full/queen size beds. When you have 4 kids, that can be a problem. When we are on road trips, we pack our portable bunk beds. Then 2 children can sleep in one of the beds, and the other 2 children can sleep in the bunk beds.
Another thing we also look for at a hotel is a continental breakfast. This easily saves our family $40 on a meal.
This is a must-have when traveling with kids, or they are going to talk your ear off the entire trip! In-vehicle DVD and portable DVD systems are always appreciated by our kids, but a lot of our DVDs have already been seen by our kids, over and over again. Rather than going out and spending a lot of money on new movies for the trip, I just borrow a few new titles from our local library or family and friends. The kids are thrilled to watch something new and I don’t have to spend a cent!
If you don’t have a DVD player for your vehicle, put together a small bag with coloring books, crayons and markers, and small action figures.
You can also plan to play some road trip games, like Ultimate Slug Bug.
Stock Up on Supplies For the Road
Once we hit the road, we try to minimize stops. I pack a cooler behind my seat with drinks for the whole family. We have water bottles that I fill with water and freeze the night before. That way as they melt, we have cold, refreshing water. I also pack one bag of snacks and a bag of first aid supplies. If you purchase these items at the gas station, it’s going to end up costing you a lot more, so you really should have all of your supplies before hitting the road.
Here are what my first aid and snack supply bags look like for our upcoming road trip:
I like to pack a variety of snacks so everyone has something they like. I also let the kids each choose one special snack themselves. They love that!
Having first aid supplies has come in handy so many times! On one trip, I got stung by a bee AND my foot slammed in a car door in the matter of about 5 minutes (it’s a long, painful story, but I survived). You never know what might happen, so be prepared!
CVS ExtraCare Rewards Program
CVS is just the place to go to fill up on necessary supplies before hitting the road. I love shopping there! The Extra Care Rewards program makes it easy for me to save money, and that’s important for our big family. We have to find ways to save money on everything we buy.
The CVS ExtraCare Rewards program has set the gold standard with retail rewards programs and is the longest running in the drugstore space with a 15+ year history. The ExtraCare Rewards program is truly designed with shoppers in mind – offering personalized value to every member, in the store, online and on-the-go. Through the CVS Pharmacy ExtraCare Rewards program, you can save and automatically earn 2% back in ExtraBuck Rewards on nearly everything you buy – from household goods, to beauty products, to gifts items for family and friends, to road trip necessities!
I used to be so organized with my coupons…3 children ago. I just don’t have time to clip and organize these days. Thankfully the ExtraCare Rewards program goes a step beyond the average loyalty program by sending offers and personalized information to everyone, not just the organized couponer. I even signed up so that now I receive additional health and beauty information directly to my inbox.
My favorite part of the ExtraCare Rewards program are the ExtraBucks! ExtraBucks are like “free CVS money” that can be used on most things at CVS Pharmacy. Unlike other confusing points-based loyalty programs, ExtraBucks Rewards were designed to make it very easy for cardholders to redeem their rewards by spending them on nearly anything they want throughout the store. I earn 2% back on nearly all purchases made throughout the store as Quarterly ExtraBucks. These rewards are just for scanning an ExtraCare card during each shopping trip, and are paid out quarterly on January 1, April 1, July 1 and October 1. It’s THAT simple! I also earn ExtraBucks Rewards by purchasing specially-advertised items that pay out at the time of the qualifying purchase. There is no limit to the number of ExtraBuck Rewards a cardholder can earn. You can even earn ExtraBucks when you are redeeming previous rewards!
With ExtraCare rewards, there is no waiting to hit a threshold to earn rewards. You automatically get rewards as you earn them. CVS makes your rewards available via multiple channels (on receipts, in app, at ECC, online account) to keep things convenient for you.
Last year I discovered the CVS Pharmacy app. If you’re anything like me, you have a hard time keep track of your store rewards cards. I can NEVER seem to find mine when I need them. Now I just access the app (accessible on mobile or tablets) to view my personalized coupons and grab my card to show the cashier. It’s so much easier!
I also use the app to see the ExtraBucks Rewards currently available, and then choose “Send to Card” to virtually add the coupon savings and ExtraBucks Rewards I’d like to use. You can even digitally store your credit cards on your smartphone, eliminating the need to carry any physical cards when shopping!
It’s pretty simple. Utilizing the CVS ExtraCare Rewards program means more money to spend on your next road trip!
By following these simple tips, you can save money on your upcoming road trips and have a great time too! There’s nothing like the memories you’ll make with your family when you take a road trip together!
