Period Talk – How To Prepare Your Daughter For Her First Period {With The Penny Pack}

August 26, 2019 by Miranda 15 Comments

This ‘Period Talk – How To Prepare Your Daughter For Her First Period’ is sponsored by The Penny Pack.  As always, all opinions are always my own.

Do you find that talking about periods can sometimes be uncomfortable?  I’ll admit it.  I’m basically an open book about pretty much everything….NOW.  If someone asks me a question, I’m usually happy to answer.  But back as a tween and then teen, I’d have turned 50 shades of red if someone wanted to talk period to me.  But seriously, it shouldn’t be such a taboo subject.  Periods are a fact of life that all girls go through.  And the truth is, without periods, none of us would be here!   So why are we so scared to talk about them?  Making the transition from childhood to young woman shouldn’t be so difficult.  And yet, it still can be.  But today, we’re hoping to help make a change with the help of the Penny Pack.

How To Talk To Your Daughter About All Things….PERIOD

Talking about periods makes almost everyone feel awkward — parents and kids alike.  But literally everyone is affected by periods.  Even if you’re not a woman, all the females in your life are dealing with this.  So let’s get real and honest.

I mentioned I’m an open book if someone asks me a question.  But, recently, when it was time to talk to our oldest daughter about all the changes that would be happening soon in life, I froze.  I think my biggest issue is that I would have to admit my first baby is growing up.  She still seems so sweet, innocent, and young.  It felt weird having to talk about periods and all the other upcoming changes.  And I know I’m not alone in these thoughts.

How To Prepare Your Daughter For Her First Period

No matter where your daughter is in her journey, help her know she’s not alone.  Before you start ‘the period talk’, make sure to let her know how proud you are of her.  Ensure that she knows you will always be there to support her.  And that she can come to you with any questions, at any time.  Share that there is a wide variation of normal and girls can get start their first period anywhere from the age of 10 to 17.  While the average is around age 12, there is a wide range of normal.

How Penny Pack Can Help

“The Penny Pack” is an introductory period gift box for daughters (and countless other girls, they hope!).  Peter and Amy Thomas, co-founders, were frustrated by the lack of real-world information available to parents and children about periods.  They wanted to do something about it and shared their idea for a company that helped educate girls about their periods before they started.   Three neighborhood dad friends who also had pre-teen daughters loved their idea.  And suddenly those friends turned into business partners and investors in The Penny Pack.

A Little More About The Penny Pack And How To Use

Since a lot of parents are unsure how to broach ‘the discussion’ with their daughters, Penny Pack has made it easy.  They have built an assessment to parents:

  • If this will be your daughter’s first introduction to her period, start off with the enclosed Girl’s Guide.  It can be read together or she can read on her own if she prefers.  This guide will provide the fundamental knowledge about periods.  From there, show her the Readiness Kit and talk through how pads and tampons work.  Share the importance about being prepared for her period to start, wherever she may be.
  • For girls who are somewhat familiar about the concept of periods, let her go through the Girl’s Guide on her own.  Then follow up with a discussion.  After that, dive deeper with the book ‘There’s Something New About You’.  Talk about what stories are her favorite and why.  Familiarize her with the contents of her Readiness Kit and decide where she should keep it, like perhaps her backpack.
  • If you’ve already discussed periods a lot and know she has a good grasp on all the concepts, present her Penny Pack as a gift.  Give her the Readiness Kit and talk about having it with her when she goes out.  Perhaps, see if she’d be interested in having a girls day and making additional readiness kits for her friends even.

    In many cultures a girl’s first period is celebrated. I think that’s a wonderful idea.

    I honestly don’t find it uncomfortable at all to talk about! Which is probably good since I have two daughters. I was raised by my dad and so I had to go through this time all by myself when I started. I am so glad that my girls have me to help them through this time. They are currently 10 and 5 but they know when mom is on her time of the month and they always get me my heating pad and are super nice to me for a couple of days. 🙂 This is such a great subscription box, I am definitely going to have to sign my oldest up!

    This really is a great ideal. There is always a difference in girls in what they know, internet/friends etc. I think something like this would be great to have at the local schools pantry.
