Do you ever feel like your space is missing something? I’ve spent years trying to perfect a playroom and bring my vision to life. I wanted the best toys, the best furniture, and some big “WOW” factors in my space.
I’ve spent countless hours online shopping, looking for the best of the best. Every new piece I brought into my playroom, I thought, this is it! This is the missing piece that is going to change the whole look of my room.
The kids are going to ooh and aww over this new toy. Then the toy arrives, the kids play with a said toy for a day or two and then toss it to the side like peas on a dinner plate.

Decorate Your Perfect Playroom – Here’s How!
I felt like if I didn’t have a high budget to put into my room, “my” perfect playroom could not exist. Until I found the one thing I was missing… COLOR!
I once read a magazine article that said the cheapest way to freshen up a room is by changing the color. So, without further ado, here are the steps I took to make my playroom vision come true.
Step 1: Inspiration
Find yourself some inspiration. Pinterest is a great tool to find a room color that fits your fancy. Some other options may include google, magazines, or really thinking outside the box, a realtor website!
Check out the listings and scroll through pictures!

Step 2: Find Your Color (Or Colors)
Bring your inspiration photo along to your local hardware store. Match your photo to the colors available to you. This next step is very important so read this carefully. When finding the perfect color, you will want to pull other color swatches in that shade.
For example, if you are searching for a blue shade, grab a few different shades of blue to find out if the undertone has cool or warm tones. That undertone can make or break your room!
You don’t want to start painting a wall to find out that your beautiful beige color that looked great in the store, now looks pink on your walls.
Step 3: Supplies
You’ve found your color, now what? Don’t forget your painting supplies! You will need painter’s tape, stir sticks, a paint can opener (or flat head screwdriver,) plastic wrap to cover your floor, a paintbrush, paint roller, and a paint tray.

Step 4: Get Ready To Put In The Work
I’m about to throw you a curveball. So what if your inspiration happens to be something a little more extravagant? So what!?!
Don’t shy away from designs just because it seems like too much work. You will not regret the decision to put in the extra time if it means it will make your dream room a reality.
For example, are you scared of stripes? Yes you will have to measure out the wall and yes you will have to get the painter’s tape perfectly straight, and it will definitely take extra time than just painting the wall one color.
Just think of how impressed with yourself you will be, that you put in the work and didn’t take the easy way out. The finished product will not disappoint!
As you can see in my photos, I have striped walls, bubble designs, and a wall mural! I could’ve painted each wall a bright color of the rainbow but that was not my of my dream playroom.
I spent countless hours but in the end, I couldn’t be happier with the way it turned out. If you have those unique designs in your inspiration photo, get cracking! Measure out your wall, put the painters’ tape on, and get ready to fall in love with your room all over again.

Step 5: Wall Mural
(If your design does not include a wall mural, you can skip this step.) I want to share how I completed my wall mural in case my photo ends up being your inspiration. If that is the case, drop a comment below! I’d love to know if my playroom becomes famous!
Now, are you ready for my biggest secret? How do you ask that I painted these perfect proportional characters? A projector. It’s that simple!
I searched for an image on google, projected it up onto the wall, and painted inside the lines. No, I didn’t have to be super crafty. No, I did not need an artistic eye to blindly paint these Dr. Seuss characters.
I just needed a simple skill I learned in kindergarten; how to color inside the lines. I used a variety of different-sized brushes to work around details and do the black outlines, but all in all, it was about staying inside the lines with different colors.

Step 6: Adding A Large Center Piece
Adding color to your walls is the cheapest way to add a “WOW” Factor to your play space, but if you can take it one step further and find a piece of equipment that will stick out in the room, it can really complete any look.
I chose FORT to complete my playroom. Children will be able to run wild with their imagination jumping from cushion to cushion. The built-in magnets provide stability to build a fort that will stand on its own but still can easily be manipulated by children.
They can also use the pieces to sit on to read a storybook or just relax. The FORT unit has so many fun usable ways for children and my favorite part of all is that the cushions are waterproof and wipeable with just soap and water!

Each FORT unit comes with 12 foam pieces with a washable cover that zips over the foam. The magnets are held in place by a dual-layered support patch with stitching & adhesive on the inside of the cushion cover. FORT provides endless amounts of fun for any age.
Step 7: That’s A Wrap!
Let’s recap. You found your inspiration. You bought your paint and supplies. You measured out or projected any details on the walls of your room. You used painter’s tape to cover trims and create lines.
You got to work and put paint on the walls and possibly picked out a large centerpiece for the children to play on. Now what? Pull that painter’s tape off and enjoy the view!
Disclaimer: The Dr. Seuss character pictures I projected onto my wall were google images and not of my own creation. FORT provided me with a free unit in exchange to be featured in this post.
