The Homemade Pedialyte Recipe That Will Save You Money and Tastes Better Too!

Well, we made it through Christmas sickness-free, but the very next day my 4-year-old woke up feeling sick. He said his stomach hurt and he had a fever.

We have purchased Pedialyte numerous times but it is so expensive and my kids never want to drink it, no matter what flavor I get.

I end up pouring one glass, they take two small sips, and then I have to throw the rest out.

Homemade Pedialyte

As luck would have it, I recently acquired a new blog and one of the popular recipes on that blog is this recipe for homemade Pedialyte. I decided to try it with my sick kiddo and it was a big hit.

I decided I would share the post here on Thrifty Nifty Mommy as well since it’s a thrifty way to save money when your kids are sick.

Yes, you can DIY Pedialyte and it’s so easy! There are only 4 simple ingredients and there’s a good chance that, like me, you already have those ingredients in your pantry!

The ingredients for an easy DIY recipe to make Pedialyte at home using just four simple ingredients.

Ingredients

  • 1 Box of any flavor of Jello (you will only need 2 teaspoons of powdered Jello, so put the extra in a Ziploc bag to save for the next round of the stomach flu)
  • 1/2 cup of boiling water
  • 3 1/2 cups of cold water
  • 3 tablespoons of sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon of table salt

Directions

  1. In a pitcher, stir together the boiling water and powered Jello until dissolved.
  2. Then add the sugar and table salt and mix some more until it has all dissolved.
  3. Pour in the remaining cold, plain water and stir to combine.
  4. Refrigerate and have the child drink frequently.

That’s it! This recipe for DIY Pedialyte is so simple and easy and way cheaper than buying the name-brand at the store. Plus, as a bonus, my kid liked the taste way better too!

  • 1/2 cup boiling water
  • 3 1/2 cups cold water
  • 3 TBSP sugar
  • 1/4 TSP of regular salt

Instructions

  • Combine the boiling water and Jello powder in a pitcher. Mix until totally dissolved.
  • Now add the salt and sugar and mix some more until that's dissolved.
  • Lastly, add the cold water and stir. If your child likes it extra cold, you can lessen the amount of water and add some ice cubes instead too.
  • Store this beverage in the refrigerator and use within 48 hours.

Notes

If you have table salt with iodine added, use that for extra essential minerals.
Freeze this recipe in an ice cube tray and add to other beverages like ginger ale. You can also store any remaining Pedialyte as ice cubes once your child is better so you're already one-step ahead the next time they get sick. Popsicles are another great way to serve them this electrolyte replacement drink if you have popsicle molds.
If it's not sweet enough for your sick kids, try adding a little bit of raw honey to sweeten it.

Additional Information

Remember when your child has a stomach virus to follow the BRAT diet (banana, rice, apples, and toast) for solid foods for a day or so and give small amounts of this simple homemade electrolyte drink recipe every 20 minutes, gradually increasing how much you give them if they are able to keep the last bit down.

This homemade chicken noodle soup recipe is a good one to fix once it seems like they are able to keep solid food down.

Make sure you keep this recipe saved so the next time your child has the stomach bug you’ll be prepared and you won’t have to drag your sick child into the grocery store. That’s always the last thing either of us wants to do when they are throwing up!

What a great idea! I keep Pedialyte and Gatorade around, but wouldn't you know it, when it's sick time I find them expired! This is perfect, I especially like the idea of using popsicle molds for them, thanks!!

I made this once last year when my kiddos got sick and my oldest said she thought it helped her a lot! My kids liked the taste too and they aren't really fans of the store pedialyte, so I was glad to have the recipe!

As a adult I have to agree with kids its not good. and I also throw away. But this sounds so good and you can also freeze it. I don't need often but frozen would come in handy.
