I’ve partnered with HI-CHEW for this post.
Have you ever heard of geocaching? I first heard about it on a trip to our local library last fall. One of the librarians was talking about a local cache. As I heard more about it, I realized this could be just the activity our family was looking for. Geocaching is a real-world, outdoor treasure hunting game using GPS-enabled devices. Participants navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and then attempt to find the geocache (container) hidden at that location. Inside the geocache you’ll find “treasures.” Normally these are just little knicknack items, maybe an eraser, pencil, little toy, magnetic……you never know what you’ll find! You aren’t required to take anything from the geocache when you find it, but if you’d like to, you can take 1 item and replace it with another item that you brought. Oh and did I mention you can start playing for FREE?!
I knew that my kids would enjoy this modern-day treasure hunting adventure! Excited for a new family activity, we told our kids all about geocaching, got them all excited, then headed to a nearby nature preserve where we were going to search for our first cache. Well, long story short, it turned out to be a failure. After searching for a while and coming up empty, we returned home. The kids were understandably disappointed.
Over the winter and spring I did a little bit more research about geocaching. Among other things, I learned that it was important to take a quality GPS unit with you or a smart phone — neither of which we took with us on the first trip. Eager to make some fun summer memories with our kids, my husband and I decided we’d try geocaching one more time, but this time we had a plan in place so we wouldn’t disappoint our kids again.
First, my husband headed out to the nature preserve on his own and found the cache. Using our smart phone it was much easier this time around. He found it rather quickly. Then, instead of taking anything out of the cache he added in an extra special treat for our kids: HI-CHEW.
As a side note, have you heard of HI-CHEW? They are a recent discovery for our family. Hi-CHEW is a Japanese candy that has a smooth, chewy consistency that’s quite impossible to fully describe. I’d never had anything like it before and our whole family is hooked on these little candies! They come in all kinds of fruit flavors like cherry, banana, grape, green apple, mango, and my personal favorite, strawberry.
HI-CHEW in place, we loaded up the kids and set out for the preserve. It’s only about a ten minute drive from our house and one of our favorite places to take the kids on a summer evening. They were pretty eager to give geocaching a try again and chatted non-stop about what kind of treasures they might find inside the cache. My husband led us into the area of the cache and then told the kids that the map said it was close. They eager scanned the woods and within a few minutes Jacob had spotted it. He was SO excited at his find! Everyone gathered around while we opened the cache and shouts of HI-CHEW rang out through the woods. Normally each of our kids only get one or two pieces, but the cache contained 1 stick for each of them and they were thrilled! They swapped the HI-CHEW for a notebook, quarter and little maze toy we’d brought from home. Finally we had geocaching success!
Ever since our first trip the kids have been eager to go on more. They are hooked on geocaching. Of course, when we opened the next cache and it didn’t contain HI-CHEW they were a little bit disappointed, but they got over it. Now they just ask to bring along their own HI-CHEW when we go hunting. That’s okay with me, it’s such a refreshing treat!

Disclosure: I’ve partnered with HI-CHEW for this post. I only work with brands that I love and opinions I express are always my own. Prize fulfillment is the responsibility of HI-CHEW. This giveaway is not affiliated with Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, or Instagram. Please note, while my husband placed HI-CHEW in the cache for our family, candy should not be left in a cache for an extended period of time since it could attract wildlife and bugs. If however you are geocaching with your kids, sneaking away to add HI-CHEW before they get to the cache is a GREAT way to get them excited, or you can just take some along to snack on while you search!
