Did you know that you may be eligible for a free breast pump through your insurance?
In 2010, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) adopted guidelines, known as the Affordable Care Act (ACA) (also referred to as Obamacare) which requires health insurance providers to offer breastfeeding support, supplies, and counseling to lactating women. This means that you may be eligible to receive a free breast pump through your insurance!
The coverage and patient out of pocket costs vary between health insurance carriers and plans, and finding that info is truly easier than you’d probably think. Lansinoh, the company I’ve trusted for my breast pump since 2012 will help you find out if you qualify for their Smartpump or SignaturePro pump from your insurance. To find out what breast pumps are covered through your health insurance plan, you can search HERE.
Why Get a Breast Pump?
There are a number of good reasons to own a breast pump!
To Go Back to Work: Many full-time breastfeeding moms also have a full-time job outside of the home. That means a breast pump is crucial! With a quality pump like the Lansinoh Smartpump, you can certainly pump enough to provide your baby with all he or she needs! If you plan to return to work, I recommend that you start pumping right away after baby is born because you’ll want to have plenty of milk available once you return to work. Pump a few times a day and you will have a nice stockpile!
For Emergencies: Even if you plan to be with your baby 24/7, you never know when you might need a supply of pumped milk. For instance, while breastfeeding my second child, my grandmother unexpectedly suffered a bad stroke. I wanted to visit her at a hospital 3 hours away. Not only did my son absolutely hate the car (and would have probably cried the entire 3-hour drive – both ways), most hospitals don’t want you to bring children into them. Luckily, I had been pumping fairly regularly and had plenty of stored milk for him. My mother-in-law was able to watch him for the day. Plus, I had my pump to take with me for the trip then as well.
For Date Night: Once you have children, date night, in my opinion, becomes even more important! Although we do a lot of in-dates, it’s still great to be able to get out of the house sometimes. Since I have a breast pump and have been pumping milk, when date night comes around, I always have plenty of extra milk for the baby.
For Eating Solids: Pumped breast milk is also a great way to add liquids to your purees and baby cereal when baby is ready to start eating solids. It’s much better than just adding water.
To Exclusively Pump: Some moms choose to exclusively pump and you DEFINITELY want a good, electric pump for that!
What Pump To Choose?
As I mentioned, I’ve been using Lansinoh pumps exclusively since 2012 when I had my second baby. I started out using the SignaturePro breast pump and then switched to the Smartpump when it was released. Both are wonderful pumps! The Smartpump offers additional features, so if your insurance will cover it, I highly recommend it. One of my favorite features of the Lansinoh breast pumps are their soft, flexible ComfortFit Flanges. The Smartpump comes with 2 different sizes so you can find the flange that works best for you!
My Lansinoh Smartpump review and my Lansinoh SignaturePro review can help you decide which pump is right for you! Both pumps feature customizable settings such as 3 pumping styles and 8 suction levels, which allow you to personalize your pumping sessions. They also have an LCD screen with easy touch controls makes Lansinoh Double Electric Breast Pumps easy to use in all environments from the bedroom to the office. It’s convenience right at your fingertips!

My insurance doesn't cover a pump like this unfortunately. This looks so comfy and sounds like it would be effective! I need to establish a back up milk supply soon just in case.
