Have you heard of the new, fantastic Fort Magic fort building set?! When I was a child, my mom would let us get out our extra sheets and blankets and we would make a fort using our dinning room table. Our table was a long, rectangular one that my grandfather had built, complete with benches that became bunk beds inside the fort. My sisters and I would spend hours under that table, playing house with our baby dolls and stuffed animals. Playing in that fort is one of my fondest memories from childhood, and my husband has expressed the same feelings about building forts when he was a child. So, when I was contacted about reviewing a Fort Magic Building Kit, I was so excited to see what my kids thought!

When I told my husband about the new package in our entryway, I think he was more excited than the kids to get building. My daughter is really into playing all the “girly” stuff and, although he is a good sport and plays along with her, I know he was really excited for a new toy that he could really enjoy with the children. It just so happened that the day after it arrived we were hit with a BIG snowstorm. The 18+ inches of snow kept him home from work and was the perfect opportunity to start building forts!
As mentioned above, the Fort Magic Building Kit comes with a full color instructional manual. The book is well made and not just flimsy papers that are going to fall apart after the first build. As a mom, I really appreciate that! The designs are clear and easy to follow.
The first thing they built together were the space ships. They looked amazing, but I’m sorry to say I did not get a picture before “Hurricane Jacob” came through and decided it was time to destroy them. He’s 21 months old and lives to destruct these days!
Next we made the Tunnel & Fort. The directions were super easy to follow, and we had the frame assembled in about 15 minutes. Fort Magic is recommended for children ages 5 1/2 years and older. My oldest is almost 4. She was very helpful in locating the pieces needed for assembly but definitely needed help from an adult (or older child) to assemble it. The fort is quite tall too (I can almost stand without hitting my head on the “ceiling,” so your child would either need a stool or an adult to finish up at the top.
After you assemble the frame, the next thing you’ll need to do is add fabric. As mentioned above, fabric covers are NOT included (however they WILL be available for purchase coming soon!). Ideally if you wanted your new forts to look as cool as the ones in the stock photos from Fort Magic, you will need to head to your local fabric store and purchase some colorful pieces to use. We happen to have a number of sheet sets that are no longer in use, so I opted to use those instead. It’s a great way to save some money and truly, I don’t think my kids care at all about the look of the fabric. Attaching the sheets took about another 15-20 minutes and the fort was complete!
My kids had a blast crawling through the tunnel and in and out of the fort. When it was her “rest time, ” Maggie begged to take it hanging out in her new fort. Even our dog was intrigued by the tent and wanted to nap in there as well.
The possibilities for building with Fort Magic are endless. You can follow the instructions included with the kit to make everything from cars, ships, teepees, castles, and more, OR your children can get creative and design their own forts. Fort Magic fabric covers are coming soon! Until then, Fort Magic customers have tons of fun covering their forts with sheets using the fabric clips included in every kit, for hours of imaginative play – right out of the box! Or, for even more creative and educational playtime, customers may visit the Fort Magic website, ‘World of Fort Magic’ page, to learn how to create custom covers and accessories just like their dressed fort images. Overall this is a fun toy that I think our family will be enjoying for years to come!
