Have you heard of couscous before? Honestly, I always thought it was just some fancy dish only served in expensive restaurants. So I was too intimidated to actually try it for a long time! But recently, we gave it a go. And not only was it pretty easy to make, the flavor packed couscous recipe I tried tasted great too! We’ve actually made it several times now as it pairs well with many meats. So if you’ve been considering branching out and trying couscous, give this recipe a try. What Is Couscous?
While many may think of couscous as a grain, it’s actually not! Couscous is a pasta made from semolina flour mixed with water. The couscous you buy in grocery stores has been steamed at least twice and then dried. You might enjoy couscous as a healthy alternative to white or brown rice. One cup of cooked couscous has fewer calories and carbohydrates than both brown and white rice. Plus, there is more fiber in couscous than there is in white rice.
Ingredients Needed:
- 2 cups chicken broth
- large onion, diced
- 1 garlic clove, minced
- 3/4 teaspoon salt (plus additional salt to taste)
- pepper
- 3 tablespoons butter
- 1 1/2 cups couscous (10 ounce box)
Directions:
- Melt Butter: In a medium sauce pan, melt butter.
- Add Onions And Garlic: Add the diced onion and minced garlic to the melted butter.
- Cook Ingredients: Cook for 3-4 minutes, stirring often.
- Add: Once the onion and garlic is soft and fragrant, add the chicken broth, pepper (about 1/4 tsp. or to taste), and 3/4 teaspoon salt.
- Boil: Bring the sauce pan of ingredients to a rolling boil.
- Cover And Remove: Once the pot is boiling; add couscous, stir one last time, and then immediately cover and remove from heat.
- Wait: Set the pot aside and let stand for 10-15 minutes.
- Fluff: After the 10-15 minute wait, fluff the couscous with a fork. Sprinkle with salt to taste and give one last stir.
- Serve: Immediately serve while still hot.
- Enjoy!
