We all know that it takes a lot of work to keep a household running smoothly. There’s plenty of jobs to go around but do you usually find yourself always picking up the slack? Today, we’ve teamed up with Whirlpool Corporation to highlight their Improving Life at Home Hub which brings together the very best of their brands’ content to help your family make the most of your time at home.
So Many Families Are At Home!
More quality time is being spent together as a household these days.
- Nearly a quarter (24 percent) say they feel closer to friends and family.
- Unsurprisingly, the most popular reason for this is people spending more time as a household (57 percent). But also one in five (22 percent) say it’s because they have been exercising or learning new skills together.
Parents across the country are caring for their families in new ways as home has become ‘school’ for millions of children. Plus, home has become work for many adults as well. That’s why we’re helping you turn everyday chores into fun ways to teach lessons that have proven benefits into adulthood.
The Improving Life At Home Online Hub
To help people keep these healthy habits up, Whirlpool Corporation has recently launched a new “Improving Life At Home” online hub, which brings expert advice together from across its many brands, with tips from happiness expert Meik Wiking.
“At Whirlpool Corporation, we are in constant pursuit of improving life in the home,” said Eleanor Reece, senior director of global campaigns, Whirlpool Corporation. “That’s why we commissioned this new study to understand how lives have changed in the last year. Amidst the hardships, challenges and uncertainty that have come in 2020, it’s been heartening to see some silver linings as new dynamics and habits emerge in homes everywhere. We want to play our part in helping people keep those up, which is why we’ve launched this online hub, which brings together the best of our company’s advice-led content to help people make the most of life at home.”
Laundry – The Never Ending Chore
Nearly every age group can pitch in to help with laundry chores—whether you’re letting your toddler help unload the dryer, or teaching a teen the ins and outs of stain removal. Clothing is worn by everyone and it’s a job that anyone can help with.
Everyday Chores Can Be Fun!
I know that most people don’t use the words ‘fun’ and ‘chores’ in the same sentence. Never fear though because there are ways to make daily chores more bearable and, yes, even fun! The Improving Life At Home Hub by Whirlpool Corporation has some really awesome ideas for making the most common chore categories, “life in the kitchen, cleaning and organizing, and basic family chores”, more enjoyable. Be sure to check out all the ideas on their hub since we’ll be focussing on the laundry category here today.
Ways To Make Laundry Chores Educational And More Enjoyable
I know not everyone can do what we did but if possible, I HIGHLY suggest creating a ‘family closet’ in your home. Whether it be turning a large laundry room or even a bedroom into this functional space, this is one place I wouldn’t scrimp if building or adding on to a house. Almost a decade ago, we were going to add a garage to our home and I insisted we also add a family closet laundry room. BEST DECISION EVER! Check out my video tour below:
We no longer have clothes (or dressers) in our bedrooms. The laundry room has become a closet for everyone too which means no more lugging baskets of dirty and clean laundry all over the home. This has been a huge time saver and made laundry chores so much easier! It’s cut hours off chores since, as a family of seven, we do at least 1-2 loads of laundry a day. Plus, we’re able to incorporate the kids helping so much easier with everything located in one space.
If a family closet laundry room isn’t an option, don’t worry. It’s still important and beneficial to include the entire family, even kids, when doing the laundry. So check out the fun ways below to make it educational too.
Laundry Activities – Towel Shapes For Toddlers
Start including kids with appropriate laundry activities from little on. My toddlers have always been the best of helpers. They desire to be next to mommy and do what I do. While it’s truly a blessing, we also know those helping hands need lots of practice to become efficient. So encourage learning and helping by making our daily chores fun. With laundry, have them start with towels. As you practice folding towels, talk about towel shapes!
Name the shape as you fold and talk about how many sides and corners you see on each. It won’t be long till your child is excitedly sharing their newfound knowledge of shapes with everyone. Plus, they’ll start to recognize shapes in other areas of life.
Easy Folding For Kids
While beginner laundry helpers will not do a perfect job, give grace and practice with them. Teach your kids the importance of self-reliance and success with this cardboard folding trick.
Make a folding board with a piece of cardboard
This simple, homemade tool can make folding easy for all ages. Simply measure equal 8″ x 10″ sections and crease the cardboard on solid lines. Next, show your child how to follow the steps below.
Color Sorting & Matching Skills
Perfect for kids and teens alike, sorting laundry is one skill that will be useful for an entire lifetime. Even the youngest of kids can match socks. Make it a game by racing to see who can find the most matches! Have teens compete against each other too. From time to time, consider having a reward for the winner for extra fun. Adding competition to this chore makes it exciting for all ages, including adults!
Use Laundry Time As Practice For School Skills
The time spent doing laundry is the perfect way to add in quizzing your kiddos on fun facts, math problems, and state capitals. You’ll be chatting and working together and the chores and school work will simultaneously get done! Laundry time is also a great opportunity to bond with your kids through heart to heart conversations. We only have them in our homes for a short time and while the days may go slow, the years go fast. Seize this opportunity for skill and relationship building!
