Halloween will be here in just a couple of weeks but it’s never too early to start planning!

Does your family go all in on a themed group costume for Halloween, or do the kids like to pick their own individual looks? We’ve done both over the years, and while the kids always have a blast trick-or-treating either way, there’s just something extra fun about coordinating costumes. The reactions we get when we do a family theme are always amazing—and even the kids notice how much more attention it gets!
Family Halloween Costumes Are Just SO MUCH FUN!

Started With A Popular Gang………
The first group costume we did was several years ago. We went with a classic….. Scooby Doo and the Gang! There wasn’t a great option in the size for our youngest at the time, so I got to join in on the fun that year. Not only did we do our regular trick-or-treating route around town, we also did a Main Street Business tour that was being hosted. We ‘stopped traffic’… For real! So many people stopped us and complimented our group costume. (Lots of mystery and clue comments thrown our way too as everyone was getting in on the !) When we were going door to door, the reactions were just as amusing. Many of the wives would shout to their husbands to “come look”! The only thing that could have made it better was if we would have had a real life Mystery Machine to drive us around. While we did have a ‘big van’, it wasn’t as cool as the Mystery Machine. LOL.

After that year, we let the kids choose their own individual costumes for a couple of Halloweens. But people kept bringing up how much they loved our themed look—so we decided to bring it back!
A Well-Known Fantasy ‘Fairytale’
The second time we did a group costume was just two years ago, we went with Alice In Wonderland. Another well-known theme where there was no trouble with people immediately recognizing who we were! Again, the reactions didn’t disappoint. The details on these costumes were fantastic and the accessories really put everything over the top. Even my husband got in on the act this time and admitted it was pretty cool to see how much joy our family costumes brought other people.

Then last year, we were actually in Disney over Halloween so we didn’t do any costumes at all. (While Disney hosts a Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party event, we already had 6 park hopper day tickets and didn’t want to spend the extra money for that special ticketed event.) But this year, we’re doing it again! Family costume number three is on the way!~
This Year…. We’re The Wizard Of Oz!

Because we have a bigger family, it can be hard to find a group costume theme that can accommodate all of our ages, sizes, and genders. Thankfully, HalloweenCostumes.com makes it easy to peruse options. While we had several ideas that were on our list, the Wizard Of Oz theme kept coming out as the front runner. So this year, we’re representing this classic 1939 film!

To be honest, this year was a bit tricky. Our foster kiddos are in limbo. While it looks like they’ll be reuniting with bio mom soon, there are so many issues in this case too. So I wanted a costume option that COULD include them just in case they’re still here (or back). The Wizard Of Oz has enough characters that it worked for our situation! (UPDATE: The kids are back with mom and will most likely not be with us on Halloween.)

And so…… HERE WE ARE:
- Dorothy
- Toto
- Wicked Witch Of The West
- Tin Man
- Glinda The Good Witch
- Lion
- Scarecrow
- Munchkin
- Terrifying Tree

I’m already so excited for Halloween 2025! Living in Minnesota, one thing I always keep in mind when picking costumes is staying warm—ideally with enough room to layer underneath. Growing up, I remember having to wear a huge winter coat over my costume most years… and I hated it. So now I do my best to make sure my kids can bundle up without covering up their whole look.
Do you have to plan around the weather where you live too?

SIZING: As usual, I do feel like the costumes run true-to-size to slightly small. So when in doubt, definitely size up. (Example: “Dorothy” typically wears a size 3t and her blue gingham costume is a 4.)

So what do you think? Do we pull off the Wizard Of Oz cast? We can’t wait for trick-or-treating this year to see what comments and reactions we get this time.
Out of the three group costumes we’ve done, which one is your favorite?
