If you haven’t read my ‘why there’s a 7 year space between Lucy and this coming baby post‘, head over and check it out. It’ll give you a bit of background and also leads into why we chose to do an elective ultrasound with Before Birth 4D Imaging this time.
First off, I have never done an elective ultrasound with any of my other pregnancies. I would just (not so) patiently wait for my 20 week ultrasound and see baby then. However, with this being slated as my 5th c-section, my doctor said he’d have to refer me to a bigger hospital to have a level 2 ultrasound done. He said he would need that more in-depth information in order to get my local hospital to sign off on the surgery/delivery. So I obliged and waited for the call to schedule. Well, by the time they got around to me, the soonest opening wasn’t until I would be 22 weeks! I know 2 weeks doesn’t sound like much but the kids had been counting down the days for months already and now I had to tell them it would be even longer before they’d find out if we were having a baby brother or baby sister. But wait! I found out I didn’t have to wait as there are elective ultrasounds available!
Top 4 Reasons Why I Choose To Have An Elective Ultrasound
There are lots of great reasons to get an elective ultrasound but here’s why we decided to:
- The Kids Could Come With: In the past, we’ve always brought our kids with to our ultrasounds. However, with all the restrictions still in place, I’m not allowed to bring any children with to any of my appointments. For the ultrasound, I’m allowed one support person (an adult). So scheduling a sneak peak gender reveal with Before Birth 4D Imaging meant that we could share the joy and wonder of seeing the baby with our kids! Let me tell you, they were SO excited during the ultrasound! It was so neat to see their amazement as they watched the baby on the big tv screen.
- FAMILY, FRIENDLY, FUN Environment: This is definitely no cold hospital room! We got to ‘meet’ our baby in a comfortable, welcoming atmosphere.
- Gender Reveal Early: While I was 19 weeks at our gender reveal appointment, you can visit Deb at Before Birth 4D Imaging as early as 16 weeks for a gender reveal. So you can see your baby, get some cute ultrasound photos, and find out the gender an entire month before your 20 week ultrasound that the typical doctors schedule.
- Peace Of Mind Checking In On Baby: For me, I am finally starting to feel some little flutters but they are still light and I have to concentrate to catch them. So the peace and reassurance to see my baby kicking and moving during the ultrasound, hearing the heartbeat, and getting some pictures for the baby book was awesome!
Before Before 4d Imaging Review
First off, I want to say that Deb with Before Birth 4D Imaging is amazing! She’s kind, welcoming, and definitely puts a person at ease. Her Alexandria office looked and felt like a little spa room and was super cozy. There was a couch and chair for the kiddos to lounge on, a big bed/table for me to lay on for the ultrasound, a comfy stool for my husband to sit next to me, and a giant screen for us all to watch baby on. The space and atmosphere was even better than I had imagined it could be.
During the ultrasound, Deb was great at pointing out baby’s hands, feet, and movements. We got to listen to the heartbeat too!
When it came time for the gender reveal, we actually asked her if she could not tell us in office, but write it down instead. So she turned off the big screen while looking and honored our request as we wanted to head to the duck park to do a reveal as a family.
Overall, I can’t say enough good things about Deb and her services. We were so pleased and I highly recommend checking her out if you’re in Minnesota. She has locations in both Alexandria and in Blaine.

He Or She, What Will Miranda’s Baby Be?!
So our guesses were all over the place. I was convinced it was a girl for the first month or so and then one day, I woke up with a premonition that it was most definitely a boy. So for the last couple months, I’ve guessed boy. My husband flip flopped between boy and girl. The kids were a mix as well with some thinking girl and others thinking boy. The night before our gender reveal ultrasound, I asked Lucy if she was hoping for a sister or brother. Her response melted my heart! She told me, “I don’t care if it’s a boy or girl, I’m just so happy we’re having a baby!”. (Cue the mom tears!)
Anyway, after we left our appointment, we headed over to the duck park and everyone left the vehicle besides me. I snuck a peak inside the reveal envelope, set up the eggs and headed out to the family.
Here’s the results:
DRUMROLL: It’s A…………. GIRL!
I didn’t do the best job making sure to announce it in the video but if you couldn’t tell, the PINK egg cracked which means baby #6 is a girl and we’re slated to even our numbers to 3 boys and 3 girls come January.
We are all super excited and can’t wait to meet this baby! So tell me, do you have any good name suggestions? We’ve started a list as a family and have one front-runner so far but we’d love to have more ideas. The only stipulations are: the name needs to be short(er), must be ‘girly’ and not something that goes for both a boy and a girl, and doesn’t shorten into a nickname.
Our current kiddos are: Hannah, Jack, Alex, Sam, and Lucy. So drop your suggestions in the comments please!

I forgot to add the other reason I thought of the name JOY for a girl born in January, even though she's not a boy, maybe your boys could say at least her name JOY rhymes with boy. I know that is a silly reason, but it is one of the reasons I stuck on when you said you will have three girls and three BOYS.

Name suggestion: Joy. January starts with a J. Joy is three letters long for three girls. I don't know of a nickname for Joy and it is a shorter name. Your daughter was happy whether it was a boy or a girl, she was happy you all were just going to have a baby. That is my reasoning behind that name for your family. Congratulations to your whole family and I know whatever name you choose it will be perfect for your new little addition when she greets everyone.

Thanks! Joy is actually one of the names on our list! If it doesn't get chosen for a first name, it's the front runner currently for her middle name!
