Happy spring! Flowers will soon bloom into vibrant hues and paint over the once drab landscape of winter. The forest will bud and then explode into a lush green. The grasses of yards and fields will sprout into dense emerald havens for newborn animals of all types and sizes. Spring is a breath of fresh, sunny air after the blue frostiness of winter finally gives up its cling and, since I hate the cold with a passion, spring pulls my mood up out of the gray, gloomy cold and into the pleasant warmth of sunny days. I love the seasonal change from winter to spring!
As spring redecorates the world, you know Easter and all its colorful decor (we just finished making our Easter Egg Garland craft!) are right around the corner. Along with this is the long-held tradition of gifting our rambunctious kiddos with baskets of toys and treats that somehow appear overnight. You might remember that last year we did a family Easter basket instead of individual baskets.
Now that we’re parents of five, we have to think more carefully about our spending. We debated on whether we would do Easter baskets this year or cut them out. In the end, we decided to maintain the tradition but to modify it a bit. Buying five baskets that would then end up sitting idle beyond holding the toys and treats just seemed like a waste of money and materials. So, instead, we decided to put their gifts inside of new pairs of rain boots! Waste not, want not!
The other debate was whether to purchase toys or treats or both. In the past, we’ve tried to fill out their baskets with inexpensive toys but these usually don’t get played with much beyond a few days. However, it didn’t really feel traditional to stuff the rain boots with only candy either. In the end, we decided that 1: we would go with fewer but better toys (that we know they will play with) and 2: using rain boots instead of a basket would limit what we could fit in them anyway. Essentially the goal is to make as little waste as possible. Win-win!
Our kids love to eat (even though they’re picky to the point of me wanting to bash my head into a wall) so treats are the name of the game this year. Candy, of course, is a staple for Easter gifts but the kids are going to get tons of that from others. This being the case, we decided to do some outside-of-the-box treats in our rain boot “baskets”. One snack that the kids unanimously love (regardless of their level of pickiness) is Slim Jim so, of course, we wanted to include those as the main feature. They really seem to like the slight spice and the smoky flavor! For those who don’t care for spice, mild Slim Jim meat snacks are available as well.
Walmart is our typical shopping location since it’s one-stop shopping and, with five kids, it’s too convenient to pass up. This time, since the items on the list are gifts for the kids, we got to shop without the four oldest of our merry band of offspring as they stayed with their grandparents.
So, off we hopped to Walmart. The first stop was the seasonal aisle where we got some of the traditional Easter treats like chocolate, trinkets like bubble wands, and, of course, plastic Easter eggs and grass. The next stop was the snack aisle to find the Slim Jim. None of our kids are big on meat so we worry about them getting enough protein. We’re glad this is one source of protein that they’ll actually eat happily! Slim Jim is the number one brand of meat sticks and are made with pork, beef, and chicken, and contain seven grams of protein per serving. The other great part about protein is that it can make the most ravenous of appetites feel satisfied.
For their boot baskets we decided on the 26-count slim jim boxes as they were the most convenient size and packaging. The kids can just grab a stick and keep playing. When we got back home we did a test run and put together one set of the boot baskets. We stuffed the inside with green Easter grass, some plastic eggs with candy and treats, a large bubble wand, a chocolate Easter bunny, and the kids’ favorite Slim Jim meat snacks.
This is our finished rain boot basket! There’s a nice assortment of snacks and treats to satisfy both their sweet tooth and their meat tooth. What do you think?
