I still remember the morning I found out we were expecting our first baby, my sweet Maggie. My husband and I were thrilled with joy knowing we were going to become a family of 3 in about 8-9 months. I couldn’t wait to go out and start buying things for our new little one. It only took one trip to the mall to realize that purchasing all of the items we needed (and the items we wanted, too) was going to be expensive! Luckily for us (and for most new parents-to-be) our friends and family came together to throw us a wonderful baby shower before Maggie’s arrival.
If you’ve ever attended a shower or had one thrown on your behalf, you are no doubt already familiar with the concept of creating a baby registry. I was pretty excited when we set out to work on our baby registry that first time. My husband and I arrived at the store, pumped and ready to fill that registry with items, only to realize we had no idea where to even start! Now that I’ve gone through the experience myself, I have a few tips I’d like to share with you to make creating your perfect baby registry easy and pain-free!
Start With The Big Stuff
While you might think that no one is going to buy you that $300 crib you are eyeing, you never know! Family members often like to purchase the pricier items, or chip in together to get you a big item. Those things are going to be the hardest for you to afford yourself, so don’t leave them off of your registry!
What do I mean when I say “big stuff”:
- Changing table (and changing pad)
- Travel system (or separate car seat and stroller)
- High chair
These are all items you will no doubt use, so put them on there!
Next, Move on to the Essentials
You might be tempted to leave this stuff off of your registry, figuring that most people already know you need these items, and you aren’t wrong. However, if you put them on your registry, you can show the shower attendees your preferred brands. If your family is likes ours and strives to use products that are as natural and organic as possible, you can choose pure and natural diapers, creams, and washes. Adding these items to a registry also allows you to specify how many of each particular item you would like AND it shows guests how many have already been purchased for you. This can help alleviate the problem of 5 people all buying you a box of newborn sized diapers (unless you have a preemie, you probably won’t need that many) but no diapers in larger sizes.
Essentials you should include on your registry include:
- Diapering products: diapers (disposables and/or cloth), wipes, diaper bag, diaper rash cream, and diaper pail
- Baby laundry detergent and stain remover
- Breastfeeding essentials and/or Bottle-feeding essentials
- Bathing items: baby bathtub, 2-4 towels, washcloths, baby wash, and baby lotion
- Baby grooming and care items: a comb or hairbrush, nail clippers, and a thermometer.
Dress that Baby
Your baby is going to go through a lot of wardrobe changes….a lot! For the first few months, plan on doing quite a bit of baby laundry thanks to all of the spit up, drool, and diaper blowouts. Everyone likes to buy clothes so you can be almost sure you will get outfits and sleepers that aren’t on your registry. Adding a few of your favorite outfits and sleepers will show guests your preferred brands and style. You’ll also want to make sure you add onesies, socks, gowns, and hats in numerous sizes.
Add on the Helpful Baby Gear
You CAN manage without a lot of the extra baby gear products, but they certainly make your life easier if your baby enjoys them. Now is the time to add those things. While not an absolute necessity, this gear is helpful to have:
- Baby swing
- Baby bouncer
- Baby floor mat
- Activity center
- Baby carrier
Prepare the Nursery
Now you’ll want to think about your baby’s nursery. Picking out new bedding is one of my favorite things to do with each baby. They make some adorable bedding sets these days! Make sure you add the following items to your registry:
- Your baby bedding set of choice and any coordinating accessories you like
- A hamper
- Blankets (you’ll want a few receiving blankets for swaddling and some heavier blankets for chilly days)
- Baby monitor
- Fitted sheets
- Rocking chair or glider
- Toy box or a toy shelf with baskets
- Crib mobile
End with the Miscellaneous Baby Needs
Each family will have different needs for their baby. This list includes items that may or may not be needed by your family. Some items that you might want to consider include:
- Baby toys
- Fireplace cover
- Safety gates
- Outlet covers, cupboard locks, door knob covers, etc.
- Lullaby music and CD player for baby’s room
- Extra car seat base(s)
- Baby journal

Walmart.com makes it super easy to create a baby registry with products trusted by millions of parents and available at unbeatable prices. Many of you know that we’re expecting our third baby. While I insisted I did not need a baby shower, my sweet family has fought against me and insisted that every baby needs a shower.
