When we added on to our home in 2020, my biggest wish was for a master suite. I’ve never had a bathroom that was connected to my bedroom, nor a large, personal walk-in closet. So both of those were HIGH on my wishlist. Thankfully, I got both!

The first thing I did once we had our house addition plans drawn up was head over to Pinterest. I wanted to find some fun design aspects that would make our personal space different from the rest of the house.

Previously, our master bedroom masqueraded as many other things in a ‘shared space’ manner: half nursery, half exercise room, co-sleeping quarters with toddlers, co-bedroom by adding a mattress to the floor when certain kids went through ‘scared’ phases, and more.

This time, when we originally added on, our master suite was going to be OUR space only. Of course, even the best laid plans sometimes don’t pan out. When we began fostering again, we had to play musical bedrooms and my husband lost his personal office. So even though our bedroom is, once again, a combined space, there are some design aspects we did that keep it an appealing, comfortable space for us.

In all honesty, I wanted one wall to have wallpaper. I’ve seen some gorgeous photos of wall papered rooms that I adore. But when it came down to it, we had a bad experience with wall paper in the past and neither my husband nor I wanted to repeat it. So that idea was vetoed. Instead, we did the following.

Accent Wall: Instead of just a ‘typical’ painted wall, I came across some fun designs during my Pinterest search. So my husband and I duplicated one! We just used some cheap wood boards from the lumbar yard and then I painted that wall white, while the rest of the walls are grey. This wall turned out beautifully and adds dimension and interest to our space.

Tall Side Tables & Fun Lamps: The typical nightstands were just too small for our space. And because we also have two windows on the ‘bed wall’ we needed specific size furniture to frame everything right. So I scoured around until my hunt led me to two ‘side tables’ instead. They look perfect for our space.

Then, I found two unique lamps (on clearance at our local furniture store) that really help these pieces all come together.

Chandelier: I found the coolest chandelier that actually doubles as a fan! If you walk into the room and look at our light, it just appears to be a typical, pretty chandelier. But it also came with a remote and when you turn the fan on, it unfolds from inside and runs like a normal ceiling fan!

Area Rug: Because we are a large family and we have a small dog, we got rid of all carpeting in our home (with the exception of one staircase). While that doesn’t typically bother me, I do miss it in our bedroom. So to cozy up the space and have a warm place to step out of bed, we added an area rug.
