This ‘cost of a home office remodel’ post is sponsored Verilux. As always, all opinions are always my own.
Are you wanting to ‘go big’ for Mother’s Day this year? We recently finished up a fairly big home renovation project and, you know what? I’m absolutely LOVING my new home office remodel space! It finally fits what our family needs. We all have the space required to accomplish our daily tasks. From homeschooling to blogging, paperwork, taxes, and more, we finally have a dedicated area that encompasses everything we need.
So if you’re looking at doing a similar project, I thought it would be helpful to share the cost of a home office remodel. Plus, I’m also excited to include some details about things that we love having in our office.
A Little Background
Before our renovation, we actually had a custom office. We had created this space several years ago to get our homeschooling out of the dining room. It was a long skinny room so the layout options were limited. But it worked…..for awhile. However, the bigger our kids got, the more we realized that we needed a larger living room. So that would mean taking down the wall between the living room and office and sacrificing our office space. And since everyone felt a little claustrophobic in the office anyway, we were all excited about the prospect of this idea.
At the end of last year and after much thought and prayer, we decided to close our foster care home license. So that meant the bedroom we used for foster children would now be empty. Since we felt that our upstairs wasn’t very functional as it was, we decided to open up the spare bedroom and create a ‘loft’ area. This would allow our school room/office to be open, welcoming, and spacious. It would allow for easy accountability with internet use as well as monitoring school work. We all immediately became excited about the idea!
Once the decision was made, we had to locate a contractor/construction team. We only had one lead that we weren’t too excited about. So I reached out to my Facebook friends and came up with some options. We quickly settled on the one we felt best about and it was a perfect fit! So the lesson learned is – ASK for referrals from people you know!
Now that we had a contractor lined up, we settled on a start date. Crazy as it may seem, we began the week before Christmas. And shortly into the project, we actually decided to do our kitchen and pantry too so we basically doubled the original job. My new mantra became ‘go with the flow’ and whenever someone would ask me a question about the project. I’d respond with ‘make it pretty’. I began to trust the experts we hired and would ask what they recommended before settling on a decision.
The original timeline of our office renovation was about a month. Of course, since we changed everything by adding a huge project to the job, it took longer. But the original timeline would have stood had we stayed with the original plan.

A Few More Details:
First, I wanted to include a video tour of the space as photos don’t always show the true sizing and details. So check out my video:
And Some Notes:
1. We hired a painter.
After learning that the trim would need to be painted after installation, which happens when everything else is done, I freaked. It terrified me to think I’d have to paint after my floors were in. So a quick call to our designer led me to a recommended painter. And honestly, it was so reasonable that we ended up having him paint the ceilings, walls, and trim. What would have taken me at least a week or two, he was able to get done in less than 2 days.
2. Note about our desks.
I estimated the price on the brown desks as they are actually the ones from our old office. Since we had only done that renovation a couple years ago, we had our cabinet guy pull the built in desk back out. But then we asked him to cut them apart and finish the sides and back to make single, movable desks. So we took into account the price we originally paid for the old office and then the amount it took to renovate them.
I’m still working on this part of the renovation. I’d still like to get a few things on the walls yet, such as a map. But for now, I’ve started with some important desk accessories from Verilux. Two must haves that we love are the Verilux HappyLight Touch and SmartLight LED Desk Light.

Final Notes About The Cost Of A Home Office Remodel
Honestly, the cost of a home office remodel ended up running us a little more than we originally expected. However, not terribly so. Our contractor was super close on his bid. The flooring and electrical just ended up running a little higher than we had hoped. But all in all, it was SO worth it to have a space that is open and functional.
But tell me, do you think the cost of a home office remodel would typically run more or less than ours did?
