If you start letting your kid sleep in your bed, they will never want to leave!
This is what I heard from a lot of people prior to having my first child. So I decided I’d never let our babies sleep with us. And then my first was born and the minute I put her in the bassinet next to the bed, she started crying. I picked her up, she stopped. Put her in the bassinet again, she cried. Picked her up, she stopped. I then put her in bed next to me and she didn’t cry. She was happy as could be. In fact, she was so happy, I could put her in bed next to me awake and she’d fall asleep on her own.
So began our journey with co-sleeping. I quickly realized that co-sleeping made nighttime breastfeeding so much easier too!
And you know what, they have all transitioned to their own crib before a year old without any issues at all. In fact, Maggie, my firstborn, was about 4 months old when I could just tell she wanted her own space at night. She was so happy and ready to be in her crib then. Gideon (my last baby) co-slept with us the longest but again, the transition to a crib was so easy with him. He’s so happy to go in his bed at night, he never cries. I just lay him down, cover him, and he drifts off to sleep.
Although we’ve transitioned all of our babies to their beds before they reach a year of age, we’ve always had a “rule” that any of our children are welcome to climb into bed with us if they wake during the night, no matter their age. I’ve found that our kids seem to go through phases. Sometimes one will come in during the night almost every night for a week, and then they won’t do it again for months. Maggie hasn’t done it in probably over a year now.
My kids are getting older and I’m going to hold onto these precious nights of snuggling up to them for as long as they’d like to!
The only thing about letting our kids join us in bed is that we recently purchased a king size bed (more room for those kids!) that’s much higher off the ground. Because they sometimes climb into bed so quietly that I don’t even realize they are there until the morning, (and have a habit of moving around a lot during the night still) I sometimes worry about the younger two falling out of our bed. I wanted to get something to help them not only be more comfortable in bed, but also provide a little bumper so they (hopefully!) won’t roll off the side of the bed at night. Friends of mine have raved about DockATot, so I couldn’t wait to try it out!
We got our DockATot Grand a few weeks ago and I understand why all my friends who have them love them so much. They are so luxurious and my son (21 months) and daughter (age 3) love to sleep in it. Even my 7 year old asks to lay in it!
DockATot recently released a new line of covers in their Nature collection. Check out all of these great new covers from DockATot:
I loved so many of them that I had a really hard time deciding which one I’d like to get, but, as you can see, I finally settled on the Emerald Marble. It’s just as stunning in person as it is in the photos online. I’m in love!
I took this photo during one of Gideon’s naps. I wanted to get a picture of his sweet little face while he slept, but I took that photo first and my camera clicks woke him up (not the brightest mom moment!). This little boy loves babies and asked for his favorite baby upon waking, and then snuggled with her in his DockATot for quite a while before getting up.
I love our DockATot Grand! It’s amazingly comfortable for my kids, stylish, and they’ve loved sleeping in it! If we have another baby, the DockATot Deluxe is going at the top of my baby wishlist!
