Holly here – We moved! My husband and I just completed the process of building our dream home. Have you ever gone through the process of building a house? Multiple people told me it was a stressful process and a ton of work. Boy, were they ever right! As we continue to settle in and look back over the last 7 months, I can NOW say that it was all worth it. My husband and I, luckily, have friends in the construction trade. Without them, I truly believe we wouldn’t have survived the process. Because we had such a specific list of people that we wanted to build our home, we were our own general contractors for this project. Kudos to those who general construction projects for a living! It is not for the faint of heart. Not only do you need bids from each trade, but you also need to align everyone’s schedule and know the process in what order things need to be done. Our team of builders communicated well with each other, and for that, we will be forever grateful to them.

Decision Making

The number of decisions to be made is endless. From the layout of the house to the color of the electric plate on your wall, you are the decider. My husband is an electrician and has been to many new construction builds. He walked us through the details of selecting materials for light fixtures, choosing colors for door handles and cabinet doors, understanding the typical direction for floor plank installation, deciding on the placement of light switches, selecting between insulated and non-insulated garage doors, determining the swing direction for specific doors, and many other finer points that contribute to the overall design.

Bigger picture items were how many bedrooms and bathrooms, what type of wood did we want on the cabinets, doors, and trim to be made out of. The type of siding and shingles we wanted to put on the outside of the house that would sustain bad weather. Around every corner, there was a decision to be made. In the end, I just wanted everything to flow and be a general theme. While selecting numerous details, it was easy to wander off into different or more bold selections. My ultimate goal was to remain neutral and add color through decorations that can be easily changed. I think this made a lot of those decisions easier.

The Outcome

I couldn’t possibly share every small detail of my experience in building a home, but I can summarize it. Some days, it was exciting to make choices and see progress; other days, I wanted to shut my phone off and not answer one more question. Ultimately, it was incredibly fulfilling to witness all my dreams come true for both my family and myself.

It was tough to even say goodbye to our old home. A home where we became parents and brought two beautiful babies to. Where I started a successful daycare business and a home where we shared heartbreak and triumphs. As one chapter ends and another starts, I’m excited to create new memories with my husband and children.
