I’ve partnered with Geomagworld for this post about building blocks.
I grew up in a single-parent home where new toys weren’t something we came by very often. We’d get a new toy or two on our birthday and Christmas and that was it! Our toy shelf was modestly stocked yet what we had kept my siblings and me busy. In a world that now offers such a huge assortment of toys, I think it’s important not to dismiss the classic toys of the past, like building blocks. Not only are building blocks timeless toys, they have so many great educational benefits!
Educational Benefits of Building Blocks
Building Blocks Inspire Creativity
Building blocks really allow your child to use his or her imagination! I remember using my building blocks to build so many things: castles, pens for my animals, cities, the list goes on and on! Kids these days are bombarded with so much screen time that they just aren’t using their imaginations like they used to. The possibilities of what your child can build with blocks is limitless!
Building Blocks Support Social Development
I love to get blocks out for my kids and watch them play together. Sure, they are siblings, so sometimes fights do happen, but many times they will work together towards a common goal. Either way, they are learning how to interact with others, through conflict and fun times!
Building Blocks Encourage Gross and Fine Motor Skill Development
When a child plays with blocks, it helps to strengthen the muscles and bones in their hands and fingers. Building those muscles is so important because that will help them with so many other things as they get older, from holding their silverware and sippy cups, to eventually tying their shoes and writing at school. Building with blocks is also a great way to improve hand-eye coordination (needed for just about every task!) and explore balance.
When to Introduce Building Blocks?
In my opinion, it’s never too early to introduce your little one to blocks. When I worked in a daycare, one of the favorite activities, even for a young 6 to 9-month-old baby, was to set up a stack of blocks and let them knock it over. Blocks are also easy for babies to grasp. As babies grow into toddlers, they can then begin practicing their hand-eye coordination as they stack and build with blocks.
Magnetic Building Blocks Are a Great Choice!
There are lots of great building block sets on the market but lately, our kids have been loving the magnetic building blocks from Magicube by Geomag. Geomagworld invented the first magnetic construction toy in 1988. Since then, this Swiss company has been creating all kinds of innovative and exciting magnetic building block sets! Geomagworld is the perfect place to look when shopping for STEM toys for your child!
Magicube by Geomag gives children all the fun of other building blocks (like wooden ones), without the frustration that comes from masterpiece creations falling apart easily with other style blocks. No matter which side of the cube you use, it will magnetically stick to any of the other blocks in the set.
Magicube by Geomag Safari Park Set
We received the Magicube by Geomag Safari Park Set for review a few weeks ago. This set is recommended for children ages 1.5 and older and is designed to help children create 4 different animals: giraffe, parrot, camel, and lion.
One of the nice things about this set is that it comes with cards that show you how to build each animal. (Also a great way to help kids work on following directions). There are also versions of some of the animals that use fewer blocks, making it easy for the youngest of toddlers and yet still offering a challenge to my almost 6-year-old when using all 14 blocks.
My daughter Maggie (8 years old) even enjoys seeing how quickly she can make the animals. She’s getting faster every day!
When not building one of the animals, the set is also fun for freebuilding and can be used with other Magicube by Geomag sets. There are a number of other animal building sets available from Magicube by Geomag and we can’t wait to add to our collection!
Magicube by Geomag Freebuilding Set
Our kids also received a Magicube by Geomag Freebuilding Set that contained 27 colorful magnetic building blocks. My kids jumped right into building things with these sets, from houses to airplanes, to just stacking them into fun shapes.
Jacob (my almost 6-year-old) is my child who loves to build with his hands the most. He can spend hours working on creations. However, he would often get frustrated when building things with other blocks because of how easily his hard work would crumble apart. The additional of the magnets inside of these blocks meant that building was much more enjoyable to him! He has been loving these building blocks and plays with them often. Below is his airplane creation and Maggie’s flower she made.
The Magicube by Geomag sets have been a hit with each of the kids, from ages 2 all the way up to 8. If you’re looking for a great building block set, I highly recommend them! They are lots of fun and very affordable too! Look for them in specialty toy shops in your area or you can also find them online at Amazon.com. There are so many fun sets to choose from!
