If you’ve been reading our articles recently you may recall our review of the Bright Signs Learning sign language program. We’ve been using it for around a month now and wanted to post an update on the progress the children have been making. Our youngest child, Zellene, has even started getting in on the fun!
To recap our first post about the Bright Signs Learning program, Maggie and Jacob (5 years and 3 years old respectively) started working through the program once we received it in October. It mixed in with their homeschool curriculum very well and seemed to help them pick up on the letters, words, and their corresponding sounds. There are two methods that Bright Signs Learning uses to accomplish this including DVDs and flash cards. By using varying media, the program helps to keep the attention of the student while providing repetition which is a key tool in educating children.
Zellene started talking shortly after we began the program with Maggie and Jacob so we decided to go ahead and let he participate in the flash cards with the other kids. We know that she doesn’t fully understand what is being done or said with the flash cards but it is a good opportunity to expose her to some word and image correlation. We also let her watch the DVDs with the older kids. The animations, puppets, and live action is a great mix that keeps Zellene involved in watching and (hopefully) learning what words correspond to certain images. It is a great way to expose Zellene to a broad range of images and words that may not come up in regular conversation with her.
Maggie and Jacob have both continued to progress well within the program. I’ve added in some challenge by randomly asking them the occasional sign for something I’ve seen in the flash cards or the DVDs. They’ve done pretty well with retaining the sign language and can show me most of them if I ask. It’s pretty amazing how much they can pick up on and relay back to us. I love watching how much they are learning and growing in these early years. They have changed so much just this last year.
I suppose that being a close part of their personal education has made me realize just how quickly they grow up. I feel very thankful to be a part of this part of their lives in a close and meaningful way. In many ways, Bright Sings Learning has made me realize just how much I enjoy being teaching my kids new things… and how it won’t last forever. They’ll be grown before I know it. Because of this, I want to give them the best possible jump start on their education. Knowledge is, after all, invaluable.
