You’ll want a patio or deck to secure your pergola to once it’s built. For our family, that process was much more time-consuming and difficult than we expected. You’ll need to find level ground (or make level ground) and then a contractor who can build it for you unless, of course, you are handy enough to DIY.

Assembling the pergola itself proved to be very simple and straightforward. The directions from Backyard Discovery were clear and easy to follow. My husband, Orin, and my father-in-law built it in just a few hours over the course of two days. They could have done it in just one day but the weather here has been so hot that they kept their working hours to earlier in the day when it was cooler.

The first thing they did was to lay out all of the pieces from the boxes, sort them, and then they got to work. You could literally smell the cedar boards when standing outside as they assembled. It smelled so good!

Before I knew it, they were done! Had I not been 9 months pregnant, I’m confident that my husband and I could have tackled the project just the two of us.

We’re still trying to decide exactly what we will put under it. We’d love to have an extra long picnic table, big enough for our whole family plus others. We’ve also considered a fire pit where we can sit out with our kids in the evening and roast marshmallows and hot dogs. There’s also the option of just a really nice seating area.
