While I tend to make this classic chili recipe more during the winter time, my family is known to request this specific recipe year round.
First off, I want to start by saying I am NOT a big chili fan. I honestly didn’t think I even liked chili until I tried this recipe several years ago. Thankfully, when my friend said she was going to be making chili, I kept my mouth shut and didn’t tell her I wasn’t a fan of the dish. Because it turns out, I do like chili made this way! While I did make a few changes, the flavors are still quite similar to her original recipe for this spectacular dish.
Award Winning Chili Recipe
If I haven’t convinced you to give this recipe a try yet, I want to also share that this is an award winning chili recipe! I entered this classic chili recipe in our local chili cook-off over six times and it won EVERY SINGLE TIME! Most years, it took first place (with the exception of one year where there were some voting issues with one big family placing votes for a particular chili but not actually trying any. After that year, the committee made some changes to protocol to ensure that the people voting weren’t casting votes for their person/relative but actually testing all the chili entries.) Anyway, all that to say, you really should give this recipe a try!
Chili Recipe Ingredients
- 1 1/2 pounds ground beef + seasoning
- 1 large onion, chopped
- 1 can diced tomatoes with green chilis
- 12 ounces diced tomatoes
- 30 to 32 ounces tomato sauce
- 28 ounces baked beans
- 1 can tomato soup
- 1 tablespoon chili seasoning
- garnishes
- shredded cheese of choice
- sour cream
Directions
- Season and brown ground beef and onion. (I season with onion salt, garlic salt, seasoning salt, and pepper. About 1/2 teaspoon each.)
- In a large crock pot or slow cooker, add the cooked ground beef and onion along with all the rest of the ingredients.
- Set your slow cooker on low for 3-4 hours so the ingredients can simmer together. (Can also do high for 1 1/2-2 hours.)
- Serve with garnishes of shredded cheese and sour cream if desired.
- Enjoy!

- Enjoy!
Notes
- Our favorite cheese to use is sharp cheddar but any flavor is fine.
- I love to serve this chili with either garlic bread or corn bread.
- Cinnamon rolls is the perfect dessert with this meal!
- If you're a fan of 'all the beans', feel free to add your favorites. However, I do encourage you to give this recipe a try as-is at least once before making any changes! You just might be surprised!
