This post about ways to use Alexa for homeschooling was sponsored by Amazon as part of an Ambassador Activation for Influence Central and all opinions expressed in my post are my own.
I’m always looking for new educational opportunities for homeschooling. Although we do incorporate textbooks into their school time, I’ve learned that there are other great ways for my children to learn beyond the traditional workbook and textbook. Just before Christmas, we received an Echo Dot Kids Edition and I’ve been so excited about all of the ways it has enhanced homeschooling for our family. Today I wanted to share with you all the ways you can use Alexa via our Echo Dot Kids Edition for homeschooling. Don’t homeschool? Don’t worry, you can use these things to help reinforce what your children are learning in private and public schools too!
6 Ways to Use Amazon Alexa for Homeschooling
Amazon Math is a program designed to help your child practice his or her math skills, tailored to his or her grade level. I’m currently homeschooling grades 1st and 3rd. It’s usually impossible to teach both of those grades at the same time, but Alexa enables me to have one child practicing math skills while I work one-on-one with my other child. Since we have started using this feature with the Echo Dot Kids Edition, I can see my children getting faster and faster with their mental math skills.
How Do You Spell…
My kids are always asking me how to spell things! When I was a child, my teachers would say, “go check the dictionary.” While a dictionary is still a viable option, using Alexa is a great option for children these days! I can’t tell you the last time I personally opened a dictionary to find out how to spell something. I use modern technology to help me spell and so I want to teach my kids to utilize it too! With Alexa, my kids are able to write in their daily journals with minimal help from me, since they can ask Alexa to help them spell just about anything.
Answer Seemingly Any Educational Question
Do you have children who like to ask you questions all day long? Random questions that seem to come from nowhere? My kids certainly do and the truth is, sometimes I don’t know the answer. When they ask me a question I either don’t know the answer to or I don’t want to answer because I have my hands full with something else, I just tell them to go find the Echo Dot Kids Edition and ask Alexa.
Who was the 12th president of the United States?
Does it rain on Mars?
How many bones does a person have?
Ask Alexa just about anything and she will do her best to give you an answer! With Alexa, the sky is the limit to what your child can learn about!
Name That Animal
My kids love animals! Name that Animal is an animal guessing game from National Geographic that you can play on the Echo Dot Kids Edition. Alexa gives kids (or adults) 5 clues, giving them a chance to guess the animal after each clue. This is a great way to include zoology in our homeschooling day in a really fun way! I like to have my kids play this game while I’m busy fixing lunch. They love challenging each other to see who can guess the correct animal first!
Check out the video below to see my kids playing this game!
Read a Story
My kids have always loved hearing stories but sometimes I’m just a little too busy to read to them when they’d like me to. The Echo Dot Kids Edition has been a great resource at storytime. Now, while I’m busy folding laundry or tending to the baby, the older children can sit and listen to thousands of stories from Alexa. There are even fun Disney stories available!
Educational and Fun Entertainment
Sometimes what I really need while I’m homeschooling is someone or something to entertain the younger children. This is where Alexa has come to my rescue so many times! The Echo Dot Kids Edition has so many great educational aspects that my littles really enjoy. She can sing the ABC song, tell jokes, plus there are tons of great kids games available for it to keep them entertained for hours. My kids especially enjoyed the Scooby Doo! Mystery Inc. Theater game which lets kids join an interactive story where they get to choose where and how the story unfolds. My kids have loved it!
About the Amazon Echo Dot Kids Edition
Since parents have loved using Alexa in their households for a few years already, it only made sense for Amazon to develop a kid-friendly, kid-centric Alexa experience with parental controls, similar to what families already experience using their Fire HD Kids Edition Tablets. The Echo Dot Kids Edition is the perfect way to introduce Alexa to your children.
When you purchase an Echo Dot Kids Edition it comes with a device—an Echo Dot, plus a whole year of FreeTime Unlimited, a kid-friendly case, and Amazon’s amazing 2-year worry-free guarantee.
FreeTime Unlimited on Alexa
We’ve been using FreeTime Unlimited in our home for over a year now and truly love everything it has to offer! As I mentioned, when you purchase an Echo Dot Kids Edition, it also includes Amazon’s world-class parental controls with FreeTime Unlimited on Alexa.
Why is FreeTime Unlimited so great? FreeTime Unlimited puts parents in charge of what their children can access with Amazon devices. Parents can select which services and skills kids can use, turn off voice purchasing, and more. Parents can also block explicit song lyrics with Amazon Music, and use Household Communications for announcements, calling, messaging and drop-in within the home. Parents can also manage their kids’ experience on Parent Dashboard—same as FreeTime on other devices.
Another great thing about FreeTime Unlimited is that provides kids with TONS of great features, both educational and entertaining, plus kid-friendly suggestions when kids are bored. For example, FreeTime Unlimited on Alexa includes over 1000 Audible kids’ books, kid-friendly, ad-free radio stations and playlists, character alarms, and premium Alexa skills that kids will love.
After the first free year has concluded, FreeTime Unlimited on Alexa can be renewed, starting at just $2.99 per month for the Echo Dot Kids Edition. And, families that already subscribe to FreeTime Unlimited on Fire tablets or Android devices can enjoy FreeTime Unlimited on Alexa content at no additional cost.
It seems that every day we find more and more reasons to love Alexa during school time. Whether your kids are homeschooled like mine or they just find themselves working on homework at home, you are certain to find ways that Alexa can be a vital asset to your child’s education.
