Growing up, some of my fondest memories are from playing pretend. So even in this day and age of technology, I strive to offer a variety of ways to incorporate make believe in our days. The benefits of imaginative play are so BIG!

Studies have shown that make-believe playtime is wonderful for kids of all ages. Check out just a few of the important benefits your kids can reap when given the space and freedom to engage in imaginative play.

• Builds Self Confidence: Kids, especially younger children, have very little control over their environment or daily life. Yet, when they play pretend, they can become princesses or superheroes; or anything else they dream up. The sky is truly the limit and they get to decide!

• Develop Social Skills: During the pretend play process, kids are interacting with other kids, adults, and even their dolls and toys in a social way. Imaginative play is a great way of helping kids develop empathy for others. If children can imagine how it feels to be left out of a game or to lose a beloved pet, they are better able to help and love on those in need. Through this process, they also become more willing to play fair, to share with others, and to cooperate in a group setting.

• Practice Language Skills: Pretend play with friends (and even on their own) often times requires a lot of talking. This helps boost kids’ vocabulary skills, improve sentence structure, and enhance overall communication skills.

• Boosts Abstract Thought: Using the imagination is an easy way to boost intellectual growth. Children who can ‘see’ a castle in the distance or beautiful cakes created out of mud are learning how to think symbolically. This becomes an important skill once in school — when they have to learn that numerals symbolize groups of objects and letters symbolize sounds.

• Overcome Fears And Worries: You’ll oftentimes see kids play-acting going to the doctor — that’s because they’re subconsciously working through events that may be scary. When children role-play about monsters under the bed or other unsettling things, they gain a sense of control. So imaginative play is helpful to kids as they vent, learn, and overcome.
