Do you make a New Year’s Resolution? While I might not label it as such, I always start out my year with a set of goals for the coming year. Here are some of my 2017 goals:
- Get moved into our new home and create a comfortable, usable space for our family.
- Take time to learn more about my camera and increase my photography skills.
- Get healthier, through eating better and exercising regularly.
I won’t be able to begin working on my first goal until probably February at the earliest. We’ll close on our house mid January but then will need to paint and replace the flooring before moving in. I’m excited to get started on that project though and can’t wait to keep you updated along the way. We purchased a fixer upper, so there will be some drastic changes made to our home in 2017. In the end, the kids will finally have a play room and I’ll finally have an office!
I’ve been told that YouTube is a great place to learn about photography and your specific camera. I find that I struggle to have “me time”, without interruptions, but this year I’m determined to give myself 1 hour a week. I want to take better pictures and I’m confident that if I invest the time it will pay off in the end.
My third and final goal is two parts. I used to love cooking but lately it has felt like such a chore. It takes quite a bit of time to plan and cook healthy meals. Since Maggie has been expressing an interest in learning to cook, I’ve decided that rather than look at this as a chore I must do, I’m going to concentrate on the quality time it gives me to spend time with Maggie and teach her about cooking and nutrition. I’ve actually already started teaching her how to cut with a knife and she is so proud!
The other half of that goal is to exercise more. Getting to the gym is just out of the question. I know it would be too hard for me to find the time to either go on my own or try to get all 4 kids ready to take and drop off at the gym’s daycare. Instead, I decided I would focus on finding ways I could exercise with my kids. They are always eager to spend time with me anyway and exercise is just as important for them as well. I have spent the past month compiling a list of fun things I can do with my kids that we will all enjoy AND get healthy while doing them. I wanted to share that list with you today.
My mother in law bought the kids “Hippity Hop” balls a few months ago. The kids LOVE these balls, possibly more than any other toy they’ve ever had. It is something the consistently play with – I’m talking every day. And, okay — don’t laugh — they make them for adults too!
The bouncy balls are perfect for enhancing balance, flexibility, strength, cardiovascular fitness, coordination and, most importantly, they are a ball of fun! The kids love it when I get down and bounce around with them!
Simply Fit Board
My sister-in-law introduced me to this unique way of exercising. It’s a small little board that works out your core muscles and improves balance. I love that it’s so small and easy to store. It’s too hard to do this one while the baby is awake, but it’s something I enjoy doing in the evening while I watch my favorite shows.
Step It Up
Do you have steps in your home? They can be a great way to exercise at home! If you don’t have steps, you can also use a sturdy stool. We have two step stools and I like to set up a little obstacle course with the kids. I’ll create “jump spots” and “step spots” throughout the house. Sometimes I get creative and throw in other sections, like one where you have to walk backwards and another where you have to “crab walk.” The kids love seeing what new and fun things I come up with!
Did you know they make exercise DVDs specifically for kids? We have the Move ‘N Grove series and the kids love them! On rainy days, it’s a great way for all of us to exercise together!
Have you ever danced with your kids for an extended amount of time? Sometimes I just crank up the music and we have a long dance party. This is one of the things I like to do on days when the kids seem grumpy. It doesn’t take long before dancing puts a smile on everyone’s face — and it really is a great workout too!
Take a Stroll or a Jog
Did you know that three quarters of the teens and adults in the US are deficient in Vitamin D? Why does it matter if you are deficient in the Sunshine vitamin? Well, Lack of vitamin D is linked to rickets (soft, weak bones) in children and thinning bones in the elderly, but scientists also believe it may play a role in heart disease, diabetes and cancer. The best way to get the recommended amount of vitamin D every day is heading outside for some sunshine and lately I have been feeling the urge to get out and jog. Honestly, I can’t even really describe it, but I’ve been yearning to not just go outside and walk, but get in a good jog. I actually did it while we were at the beach in October and it felt amazing and exillerating. I knew I needed a great stroller so that jogging could become a regular part of my 2017 schedule. Hello phil&teds sport!
The phil&teds brand is known for their line of clever strollers and let me tell you, I have been so impressed by the sport! The braking system on this stroller is everything. Everything! It features a hands-free, foot-free auto brake. Basically, when you stop pushing the stroller, the brake automatically engages. See:
I’ve got 4 young kids and to be honest, it’s easy to get distracted. Not having to remember to engage the brake is really a huge help!
When the sun is shining, we head outside for a jog through the neighborhood. My kids love the opportunity to get out and run off some energy. The sport is great at maneuvering, whether we’re jogging through the grass, gravel, or on the asphalt. It’s also easy to steer, thankfully, since the kids like to dart out in front of me sometimes. The double kit that’s offered is next on my shopping list because, although she tries, sometimes little Zellene slows us down during our jog. I’d love to be able to add her to the stroller so we can go full steam ahead the whole time.
You can find out more about the sport stroller by visiting the phil&teds website. I really think they knocked it out of the park with this stroller. Make sure you check out the brand new graffiti print too; I’m in love!
If your goal is to fit in more exercise this year, I hope that my tips will help make it possible for you. I’m looking forward to accomplishing my goals in 2017 — I’d love to hear what you’re hoping to achieve as we head into the new year!
