We received the ASUS ZenPad S 8.0 Z580C at no cost to facilitate a review.
As a kid, watching Star Trek always fueled my geeky imagination more than any other show, movie, or book. The technology always blew my mind. The majority of the technology is pure fantasy and will remain so either for quite some time or indefinitely. But a lot of things out of that futuristic fictional universe have come into fruition in one way or another. Video chat, touch screens devices, and worldwide instant communication are just a few of the “predictions” that ultimately came true. Or, perhaps, the fictional technology inspired our generation to make it real.
Touch screen devices and video chat were the things that stuck with me the most for some reason. At the time, I couldn’t fathom actually having a video chat with someone in real time on a touch screen or voice operated device. The touch screen glass really seemed almost impossible to my child mind. “How could something like that possibly work”, I thought to myself. Oddly, with the technology of today, the touch screen has become the most arbitrary thing! The things that amaze and wonder us as children somehow loses their magic once we become used to it or we realize it is prohibitively expensive.
As we all know well, technology isn’t cheap especially if you are intent on keeping up with the latest tech. Cutting edge is always expensive. Well, until now. ASUS has consistently been a brand that represents great technology at an affordable price. They’ve continued on with this tradition with the ASUS ZenPad S 8.0 Z580C.
The first thing that caught my eye about the ZenPad S 8.0 is the sleek and thin casing. It is shockingly thin and light. The back is largely a textured black metallic that changes to a soft faux leather rubber along the edges that, in combination with the thin case, make the tablet comfortable to hold. With the rubber grip, the tablet can be held with a single hand at the bottom or with two hands while the tablet is in the landscape position. The ZenPad’s quality feels very solid especially considering the overall lightweight build. It measures in at 8 x 5.3 x 0.27 inches, a bit wider than the standard ZenPad 8 but also a little thinner.
The ZenPad S 8.0 is loaded with Android 5.0 Lollipop. I am a big fan of Android and I’ve really been enjoying this version. All ASUS tablets come loaded with their own useful “ZenUI” apps to make your everyday life easier. For example, “ZenMotion” allows you to create custom screen gestures that automatically open a predesignated app.
The 2K screen (1536 x 2048) is bright, colorful, and clear. The screen makes an awesome combo in conjunction with the exceptional DTS HD Premium Sound front-facing speakers with Sonic Master technology . This tablet is great for movie junkies like myself. The glass covering the 8″ screen is covered with an anti-fingerprint coating and is fully laminated. This is always welcome on my device screens because certain little ones can’t seem to keep their mitts off of it! The software includes an auto-dimming feature if the tablet starts to get too warm during a bout of vigorous gaming or other process-heavy apps. As soon as the device cools back down, the screen brightness returns to its prior setting.
The engine of the ZenPad S 8.0 Z580C is a 64 bit Intel® Atom™ Z3530 Quad-Core cpu in combo with 2GB of memory. I’ve run it through various trials and tests, none of which slowed the tablet down much. Storage clocks in a 32GB for my model but a 16GB model is also available. ASUS includes 5GB of their lifetime Webstorage space and Google offers 100GB of free Google Drive space for 2 years. The ZenPad S 8.0 interface comes with 1 Micro USB, 1 2-in-1 Audio Jack (Headphone / Mic-in), and 1 Micro SD Card Reader compatible with cards up to 128GB (SDXC). The “selfie” camera is 2 MP while the front camera is 5 MP.
Battery life is advertised at 8 hours, although with the paces I put it through I averaged closer to 5 or 6 hours. I am perfectly happy with that kind of battery life. My phone gets nowhere near that longevity. I think this is par for the course with modern tablets and smart phones.
As always, ASUS has created another fantastic tablet at an affordable price. The difference with the ZenPad S 8.0 Z580C is that ASUS has outdone itself with the build quality, the screen, and the speakers. It is a beautiful device; a peace of artistic exhibition along with good power, decent battery life, and a gorgeous screen. The ASUS ZenPad S 8.0 is a great choice for your tablet and one that will serve you well for years.
The ASUS ZenPad S 8.0 Z580C is currently available at Amazon.com for just $199.99 which is, in my opinion, a phenomenal value!
