Winix Air Purifier Review and Giveaway

There’s something about becoming a mother that makes you look at your home in a whole new way. Sure, I liked it to be clean and tidy before kids, but now that I have kids, I am much more concerned about how my home and the effects it can have on the health of my family. Most people will spend more time indoors, at their home, than in any other place, which is why taking steps to ensure that you are breathing in clean air at home is so important.

Winix sent me their WAC9500 Large Room Ultimate Pet True HEPA Air Cleaner with PlasmaWave™ Technology to try out in our home. We have 1 dog (with long hair that is constantly shedding!), a cat, 2 kids, and allergies, so it was a good match for our home!

The features of this unit include:

  • + 5-Stage Air Cleaning
  • 99.99% True-HEPA Filter that removes 99.99% of all airborne pollutants as small as 0.3 microns from the air passing through the filter.
  • Auto Mode with Smart Sensors to measure room impurities and adjusts fan speed accordingly to remove them efficiently and effectively.
  • EnergyStar Qualified
  • PlasmaWave™ Technology which creates Positive and Negative ions that combine with natural water vapor to form hydroxyls. Hydroxyls instantly neutralize viruses, bacteria, chemical vapors, odors and gases in the air by breaking apart their molecular structure into water vapor and other harmless air molecules.
  • Programmable Remote Control that allows adjustments from anywhere in the room.
  • Sleep Mode which dims the control panel and operates fan at the quietest setting for continuous operation without disturbing sleep.
  • Washable Anti-Bacterial Pre-Filter which is a mesh filter that allows air flow while trapping large particles such as pet hair, lint and pollen. This pre-filter helps to extend the life of the True-HEPA filter by capturing these larger particles and impurities. The materials used to create this filter are specifically designed to resist the growth of bacteria.
  • Washable AOC™ (Advanced Odor Control) Carbon Filter that absorbs and neutralizes offensive pet and household odors. Made from natural coconut shell; this enhanced carbon filter is 3 times more effective at removing ammonia and other offensive odors than a standard disposable carbon filter.

I decided to place our filter in the room we use the most–our living room. We live in a townhouse and our main floor is completely open, so really it was cleaning our living room, dining room, small bathroom and kitchen. I felt like the real test came the night I decided to break out the deep fryer (I know, I know, it’s unhealthy but some days I just have to fix french fries that way!). Normally after I’ve used the fryer, it seems like it takes forever–longer than a day– to get that fast-food smell out of the air. It’s one of the reasons I don’t like to fry things in the house.  After frying this time around, when I was immediately finished and we were eating dinner, there was already a noticeable difference in the smell (or lack there of) in our house. Within a few hours you could walk into my home and have no idea I had just turned my kitchen into a mini fast food restaurant!

Some of the things I love about this unit:
  • It’s not super tiny, but it is small enough that it doesn’t take up too much excess space in our already small home.
  • Remote control, so I can adjust the settings without have to stop whatever else I’m doing (and with a 2 month old, lets face it, most likely I’m changing, feeding, or trying to rock him to sleep!)
  • Washable Filter–sure, it takes a little bit more time since you have to take it out and wash it, but it saves money, which is important to me!

The only negative thing I can say about this air purifier is, like with any air purifier, when it is time to replace the filters, they can be rather expensive.

Obviously with an air cleaner it is a little hard to really SEE it working, but I do feel like it has improved the quality of our air.  Not only has it helping in eliminating odors, but my allergies have not felt as sever lately either. Thanks Winix!
